Different Windows, Same Source: The Many Ways We Connect With Spirit and Energy

Woman exploring spiritual connection and consciousness through mediumship, psychic ability, Reiki, energy healing, mysticism, channeling and intuition.

By High Desert Medium | Palm Springs Psychic Medium

The more I work with Spirit and explore consciousness, the more I believe that many of the things we call separate spiritual practices may not be separate at all.

Mediumship. Psychic ability. Reiki. Energy healing. Channeling. Mysticism. Meditation. Intuition. Dream work. Spiritual healing. Prayer. Divination.

We give these experiences different names, and they certainly don’t all look or feel the same.

But what if they’re different ways of accessing the same Source?

I’ve been thinking about it like a house.

Imagine several people standing outside the same house, each looking through a different window.

One person is looking through the front window and can see the living room. Another person is looking through a side window and can see the kitchen. Someone at the back of the house sees something completely different. Another person is looking through an upstairs window and has a perspective none of the others can see.

If they described what they saw, their descriptions could sound completely different.

But they’re all looking into the same house.

I think spirituality and consciousness may work in much the same way.

Mediumship Is One Window

Mediumship happens to be one of the windows I know particularly well.

When I connect with someone in Spirit, the information can come through in different ways. I might feel something, see an image in my mind, suddenly know something, become aware of a personality characteristic, or receive an impression connected with a memory or relationship.

That’s why we talk about the different clairs: clairvoyance, clairsentience, claircognizance, clairaudience and others.

But even those may simply be smaller windows within a larger window.

The purpose of evidential mediumship isn’t just to receive random spiritual information. It’s to bring through details that help identify the person in Spirit and demonstrate the relationship and connection that existed—and, I believe, still exists.

Mediumship is my way of looking into the house.

But it’s certainly not the only window.

Psychic Ability Is Another Window

Psychic work feels different to me than mediumship.

In a mediumship reading, my intention is to connect with loved ones in Spirit.

In a psychic reading, the focus is usually on the person sitting with me and what’s happening in their life.

Relationships. Career. Decisions. Moving. Family. Direction. Opportunities. Patterns. Choices.

The information may still arrive intuitively, but I’m looking through a different window.

That’s an important distinction because psychic ability and mediumship are often treated as though they’re exactly the same thing.

I don’t experience them that way.

But I do believe they may originate from the same larger field of consciousness.

Different window.

Same house.

Reiki and Energy Workers May Experience It as Energy

Now imagine someone else approaching the house.

Instead of receiving information about someone’s life or communicating with Spirit, this person experiences energy.

A Reiki practitioner may become aware of areas that feel blocked, heavy, active, warm, cold or simply in need of attention.

An energy worker may sense subtle changes in and around the body.

Another healer may work with chakras.

Someone else may use sound, breath, crystals or hands-on spiritual healing.

Their experience may sound completely different from mine as a medium.

But is it necessarily coming from a completely different place?

Maybe not.

Perhaps they’re interacting with another aspect of the same underlying energy or consciousness.

They’re simply standing at another window.

Mystics Have Been Looking Through These Windows for Thousands of Years

Long before we used terms like psychic development, energy work or expanded consciousness, mystics were exploring experiences that went beyond ordinary physical awareness.

Mystical traditions can be found throughout human history and across cultures and religions.

Some mystics describe a profound sense of unity.

Others describe communication with the Divine.

Some experience visions.

Some enter deep states of prayer or contemplation.

Others describe losing the sense of separation between themselves and everything around them.

The language changes depending on the culture and spiritual tradition.

One person might call it God.

Another might call it Spirit.

Someone else might say Source, Divine Intelligence, Universal Consciousness or simply energy.

Maybe we’re using different words because we’re looking through different windows.

Channeling Is Yet Another Perspective

Yesterday I wrote about disclosure, consciousness and channeling.

Channeling fits naturally into this larger conversation.

A channeler may feel that they are allowing another consciousness, intelligence or collective to communicate through them.

Some channelers describe the source as spiritual.

Others describe guides.

Some describe higher consciousness.

Others believe they’re communicating with nonhuman or off-world intelligence.

Whatever someone believes the source to be, the experience involves becoming receptive to information outside the person’s normal everyday thought process.

Once again, the view is different.

But the process of shifting awareness and becoming receptive has similarities to experiences described in psychic work, mediumship, meditation and mysticism.

Another window.

Same house.

Meditation May Be the Quietest Window

Not every spiritual connection involves receiving messages.

Sometimes the experience is simply stillness.

Meditation can quiet the constant stream of thoughts that normally occupies our attention.

And when that noise becomes quieter, people sometimes notice things they hadn’t noticed before.

A feeling.

An intuitive thought.

A sense of connection.

A sudden understanding.

Or simply a profound sense of peace.

There doesn’t always need to be a message.

Perhaps sometimes the connection itself is the message.

Dreams May Be Another Way In

Dreams fascinate me because our normal analytical mind isn’t operating in quite the same way when we’re asleep.

Many people have experienced dreams involving loved ones in Spirit that feel completely different from ordinary dreams.

They may wake up knowing, rather than simply believing, that something meaningful happened.

Other people receive intuitive information through dreams.

Some dream about situations before they occur.

Others receive symbols or guidance that only make sense later.

Again, not every dream has to be spiritual. Sometimes a dream is simply a dream.

But perhaps dreaming gives consciousness another window through which to experience information.

Some People Simply Know

Then there are people who would never describe themselves as psychic, a medium, a healer or a mystic.

They simply know things.

They walk into a room and immediately sense the atmosphere.

They meet someone and have an instant feeling about them.

They know when someone they love is struggling before they’ve been told anything.

They think about someone moments before that person calls.

They have a gut feeling telling them to do something—or not to do something.

Most people have probably experienced something like this at least once.

We call it intuition.

But perhaps intuition is the window almost everyone has been looking through without realizing there was an entire house behind it.

We Don’t Have to Decide Which Window Is Right

This may be the most important part for me.

Spirituality sometimes becomes unnecessarily competitive.

One person believes their practice is more legitimate than another person’s.

Someone thinks mediumship is real but Reiki isn’t.

Someone believes in energy healing but doesn’t understand channeling.

Another person trusts prayer but doesn’t relate to psychic ability.

I don’t think we need to do that.

If we’re standing outside a house looking through different windows, it would be ridiculous for the person looking into the kitchen to tell the person looking into the living room that what they’re seeing doesn’t exist simply because they can’t see it from their window.

Both views can be real.

Neither person necessarily sees the entire house.

And maybe that’s the point.

Perhaps We Need One Another

I’ve said many times that I believe we are Spirit first.

If that’s true, then perhaps psychic ability, mediumship, healing, intuition and mystical experiences aren’t supernatural abilities added onto us.

Perhaps they’re natural expressions of consciousness that different people experience in different ways.

One person feels.

Another sees.

Another knows.

Another heals.

Another communicates.

Another channels.

Another dreams.

Another finds connection through meditation or prayer.

And some people discover that they can look through several windows.

That’s one of the things I love about developing psychic and mediumistic ability. You begin recognizing how you naturally receive information rather than trying to experience Spirit exactly the way someone else does.

Your window doesn’t have to look like mine.

What Is the Source?

This brings us to the biggest question.

What is the house?

I don’t pretend to have a definitive answer.

Some people call it God.

Some call it Spirit.

Some call it Source.

Others call it Universal Consciousness, Divine Intelligence, the Universe or simply energy.

The terminology matters less to me than the experience.

I believe there is something greater connecting us.

I experience part of it through psychic awareness and mediumship. A Reiki practitioner may experience it through energy. A mystic may experience it through union with the Divine. Someone meditating may experience it as profound stillness. Someone grieving may experience it through the unmistakable presence of a loved one in Spirit.

Different experiences.

Different languages.

Different windows.

But perhaps the same Source.

Which Window Do You Look Through?

Maybe the question isn’t:

“Do I have psychic ability?”

Perhaps a better question is:

“How do I naturally connect?”

Do you feel?

Do you know?

Do you dream?

Do you sense energy?

Do you receive images?

Do you feel especially connected during meditation or prayer?

Do you sense loved ones who have passed?

You don’t have to force yourself to experience spirituality the way somebody else does.

Pay attention to your own window.

And remain curious about what other people may be seeing through theirs.

Maybe none of us sees the entire house.

Perhaps that’s part of the reason we need one another.

The medium, the psychic, the Reiki practitioner, the energy worker, the healer, the mystic, the channeler, the meditator and the person who simply trusts a quiet inner knowing may each be seeing something from a slightly different perspective.

But behind all those windows may be the same thing.

Spirit. Consciousness. Energy. God. Source.

Whatever name speaks to you.

Different views.

Different experiences.

Different languages.

But perhaps, ultimately, the same light.
