If you’ve spent any time exploring spirituality, mediumship, reincarnation or consciousness, you’ve probably encountered the terms soul, Higher Self and Oversoul.
Sometimes they’re used almost interchangeably. Other times they’re described as completely different levels of consciousness.
So what’s the difference?
The first thing to understand is that there isn’t one universally accepted definition. Different spiritual traditions, philosophers and metaphysical teachings use these words differently.
But there is a way of looking at them that I find particularly interesting—especially from the perspective of someone who works with psychic ability and evidential mediumship.
Imagine consciousness existing in layers.
Your physical personality is the part of you experiencing this life right now.
Your soul may be the larger spiritual identity behind that personality.
Your Higher Self may represent an expanded awareness of that soul.
And the Oversoul may represent an even greater level of consciousness connecting individual spiritual identities to something much larger.
Let’s look through each of those windows.
What Is the Soul?
When most of us use the word soul, we’re talking about the spiritual essence of an individual—the part of us that exists beyond the physical body.
Your body changes throughout your lifetime. Your thoughts change. Your beliefs change. Even your personality evolves.
Yet many spiritual traditions suggest that something deeper remains.
That is what we commonly call the soul.
From a reincarnation perspective, the soul may experience more than one physical lifetime. Each incarnation becomes another experience through which the soul learns, grows and expands.
That creates an interesting distinction.
Dan Pickel is the personality experiencing this particular lifetime. But my soul may be something much larger than the person called Dan.
If reincarnation is real, my soul existed before this personality was born and will continue after this personality’s physical life ends.
And that immediately leads to another question.
Where do all those experiences go?
That’s where the idea of the Higher Self becomes fascinating.
What Is the Higher Self?
I like to think of the Higher Self as a broader perspective of our own consciousness.
Our everyday awareness is necessarily limited.
We’re focused on appointments, relationships, work, bills, problems, hopes, fears and whatever happens to be directly in front of us.
It’s difficult to see the entire journey when you’re standing in the middle of it.
The Higher Self can be thought of as the part of consciousness that sees more of the map.
Imagine hiking through a canyon.
From the canyon floor, you can see the trail immediately ahead of you. You might see the rocks, trees and turns in the path.
But someone standing on the mountain above you can see where the trail came from, where it’s going and what lies beyond the next turn.
You’re both looking at the same journey.
You simply have different perspectives.
That is one way of understanding the Higher Self.
And perhaps some of what we call intuition comes from accessing that broader perspective.
That sudden knowing.
That feeling that something isn’t right.
The inexplicable urge to take one path instead of another.
The sense that something important is about to happen.
Maybe intuition isn’t always information coming from somewhere outside us.
Perhaps sometimes we’re hearing from a larger part of ourselves.
Then What Is the Oversoul?
This is where things become even more interesting.
The term Oversoul has been used in different ways throughout spiritual and philosophical history.
Ralph Waldo Emerson famously wrote about the Over-Soul in the 19th century. His concept described something universal—a divine spiritual unity underlying and connecting humanity.
Later metaphysical and esoteric teachings developed their own interpretations.
In some modern spiritual systems, the Oversoul is described as a larger consciousness that may encompass multiple souls or incarnations.
Other teachings use Higher Self and Oversoul almost interchangeably.
Still others use Oversoul to mean something closer to universal consciousness itself.
That’s why I don’t think it’s helpful to insist there is only one correct definition.
Instead, consider the basic idea:
What if individual consciousness exists within progressively larger fields of consciousness?
Your personality exists within the soul.
The soul exists within a greater consciousness.
That consciousness may exist within something greater still.
Eventually, perhaps everything returns to one Source.
Bashar considers a vast, non-physical collective identity or higher source consciousness that splits itself into multiple smaller fragments or “souls/avatars” experiencing simultaneous lives across different timelines, dimensions, and realities.
Think of a Tree
Another way to visualize this is to imagine a huge tree.
Your present human personality is a leaf.
The soul might be the branch supporting that leaf.
The Higher Self might be a larger branch connecting multiple experiences.
The Oversoul could be the trunk or even the entire tree, depending upon which spiritual interpretation you’re using.
And Source?
Perhaps Source is the ground from which the entire tree grows.
The interesting thing is that the leaf isn’t separate from the tree.
It only appears to be individual because of where we’re looking from.
What Does This Mean for Mediumship?
This is where these ideas become especially fascinating to me.
When I connect with someone in Spirit during an evidential mediumship reading, they often present with recognizable characteristics.
Personality.
Memories.
Relationships.
Humor.
Emotions.
Personal experiences.
Sometimes very specific details that help the sitter recognize who is communicating.
That suggests individuality continues in some form.
But if the soul is much larger than the personality we knew during physical life, what exactly are we connecting with?
Are we communicating with the personality?
The soul?
The Higher Self?
Or can consciousness express itself through all of these levels?
I don’t pretend to have a definitive answer.
But my experiences with mediumship have made me believe consciousness is far more complex than our everyday physical awareness suggests.
What About Past Lives?
Reincarnation makes this question even more interesting.
Suppose a soul has experienced dozens—or hundreds—of incarnations.
Where are those personalities now?
Imagine someone named Sarah living in 1750, someone named Michael living in 1890 and someone named David living today.
If all three are incarnations of the same soul, what happens to Sarah and Michael?
Do those personalities remain accessible within the larger consciousness of the soul?
Are they absorbed into something greater while still retaining some form of individuality?
Could the Higher Self contain the collective experience of all those lives?
And if a medium connected with Sarah, what level of consciousness would actually be communicating?
These are questions humanity has explored for thousands of years.
I don’t think we should be afraid of saying we don’t know.
Sometimes the questions themselves expand our understanding.
Maybe Consciousness Isn’t Either/Or
We tend to think in terms of separation.
You’re either an individual or you’re part of something larger.
But perhaps consciousness doesn’t work that way.
Think about the ocean.
A wave has an individual shape.
You can point to it.
You can watch it rise and fall.
For a moment, it appears completely separate.
But the wave never stops being the ocean.
Maybe we are something similar.
We can be individuals while simultaneously being part of something infinitely larger.
Your personality can be real.
Your soul can be real.
Your Higher Self can be real.
And a greater field of consciousness—what some might call the Oversoul—can also be real.
One doesn’t necessarily cancel out the others.
Different Windows, Once Again
This connects beautifully with something I recently wrote about: different windows looking into the same house.
Mediumship may be one window.
Psychic ability another.
Reiki and energy work another.
Mysticism, channeling, meditation, dreams and intuition may offer still more views.
Perhaps soul, Higher Self and Oversoul aren’t competing ideas either.
Maybe they’re different perspectives on consciousness depending upon where we’re standing.
Our everyday personality looks through one window.
The soul may look through another.
The Higher Self may see more of the house.
And the Oversoul may recognize that the house was never separate from everything surrounding it.
We May Be Spirit First
One belief that continues to resonate strongly with me is that we are Spirit first and human second.
We tend to think of ourselves as human beings who occasionally have spiritual experiences.
Perhaps it’s the other way around.
Maybe we are spiritual beings temporarily experiencing physical reality.
If that’s true, our everyday personality may represent only a small portion of what we actually are.
Psychic experiences, mediumship, intuition, dreams and moments of profound knowing may occasionally allow us to glimpse beyond that smaller perspective.
Not because we’re becoming something supernatural.
Perhaps we’re simply remembering more of what we already are.
Soul, Higher Self and Oversoul
So what’s the difference?
One useful way to think about it is this:
The soul is your enduring spiritual identity.
The Higher Self is the expanded awareness of that spiritual identity—a perspective beyond the limitations of everyday consciousness.
The Oversoul can be understood as an even larger field of consciousness connecting individual spiritual experience with something greater, although traditions differ considerably in how they define it.
And beyond all of them may be something even larger.
Spirit.
God.
Universal Consciousness.
Source.
Whatever word feels right to you.
Maybe we’re individual expressions of that Source, experiencing life through different bodies, personalities and perspectives.
Different leaves.
Different branches.
Different windows.
But perhaps ultimately—
the same light.
