When most people hear the word channeling, they imagine someone sitting quietly with their eyes closed, receiving messages from a spiritual guide or allowing another consciousness to speak through them.
And while that is one form of channeling, I believe the experience is much broader than most people realize.
In fact, I believe we all channel in one way or another, often without even knowing we’re doing it.
Think about the moments in your life when something seemed to flow effortlessly. Perhaps you said exactly the right thing at exactly the right moment, without having any idea where those words came from. Maybe you created something beautiful, solved a problem, or responded to a situation in a way that surprised even you.
We’ve all had experiences where something seems to move through us rather than come entirely from us.
I believe those moments can offer a glimpse into what channeling really is.
And the wonderful thing is, you don’t have to be a professional psychic medium to experience it.
What Is Channeling, Really?
In spiritual terms, channeling is generally understood as receiving information, inspiration, or energy from a source beyond our ordinary conscious awareness.
That source might be understood as Spirit, a spiritual guide, our higher self, or a greater field of consciousness.
Some people experience channeling through words. Others receive images, feelings, melodies, movement, or sudden moments of understanding.
For me, channeling isn’t necessarily about surrendering control or entering an unusual state of consciousness.
Sometimes it’s simply about getting our thinking minds out of the way long enough to allow something else to come forward.
We spend so much of our lives analyzing, questioning, planning, and second-guessing ourselves that we rarely notice what happens when we stop trying so hard.
And yet, some of our most remarkable moments occur when we do exactly that.
Billy Elliot and the Electricity of Inspiration
There’s a scene in the film Billy Elliot that has always struck me as a wonderful example of what I’m talking about.
Billy is a young boy with an extraordinary passion for dancing. During an audition, he’s asked what it feels like when he dances.
He struggles to explain it.
He describes a feeling of disappearing into the experience, almost forgetting himself, and then compares it to electricity.
I think that’s a beautiful description of what channeling can feel like.
Billy isn’t calculating every movement or consciously deciding what emotion to express. He’s allowing something to move through him.
The music, his body, his emotions, and his awareness seem to become one experience.
He’s no longer thinking about dancing.
He’s simply dancing.
Psychologists might describe something like this as a flow state, when a person becomes deeply absorbed in an activity and their actions seem almost effortless.
I believe there’s also a spiritual way to look at that experience.
What if, in those moments, we’re allowing ourselves to connect with a level of inspiration that isn’t normally accessible when we’re busy thinking about everything?
What if the electricity Billy describes is his way of experiencing that connection?
I don’t believe every moment of creative flow must be spiritual. But I do believe some of those experiences invite us to consider that possibility.
Are Writers Channeling Their Stories?
Consider the creative process of writing.
Authors sometimes describe their characters as though they’re real people with minds of their own.
A story begins with a simple idea, but somewhere along the way, the characters seem to take over.
The writer may have planned one ending, only to discover that the story moves in a completely different direction.
Stephen King is a fascinating example.
His approach to writing often emphasizes discovering a story rather than forcing it into a predetermined structure.
I find that concept particularly interesting.
From my spiritual perspective, I believe writers can channel creative inspiration, whether they recognize it as channeling or not.
Imagine sitting down at your computer with only a vague idea of what you want to write.
You begin typing.
Suddenly, the words start flowing faster than you can think about them. Ideas appear that you hadn’t consciously considered. Characters develop personalities, conversations unfold, and the story seems to write itself.
When you finish, you read what you’ve written and wonder where some of it came from.
Was it imagination? Subconscious creativity? A spiritual guide offering inspiration?
Perhaps there are different explanations for different experiences.
But I believe creative inspiration can be one of the ways we experience channeling in everyday life.
And writers certainly aren’t the only people who experience it.
Musicians, Singers, and the Power of Letting Go
Have you ever watched a singer perform and felt that something extraordinary was happening?
Not simply because the singer had a beautiful voice, but because the performance seemed to come from somewhere deeper.
There are musicians who can play a familiar song hundreds of times, yet on one particular evening, something changes.
The music takes on a life of its own.
The performer stops thinking about the notes, the audience, or the technical aspects of the performance.
They become completely immersed in the music.
Sometimes a singer will describe feeling as though the song is moving through them.
A songwriter may wake up with a melody already playing in their mind.
A musician improvising onstage may play something they’ve never practiced before.
I believe these moments can reflect a kind of channeling.
The performer is still using their talent, training, and experience. Those things matter tremendously.
But perhaps something additional is happening when they become receptive to inspiration.
I don’t see spiritual assistance as replacing human ability.
I see it as something that can work alongside it.
The musician brings the instrument, the knowledge, and the willingness.
In my spiritual understanding, a guide may help inspire what comes next.
Spiritual Guides Aren’t Just for Psychic Mediums
This brings me to something I believe strongly.
I believe we all have spiritual guides, and their assistance isn’t limited to psychic readings or communication with loved ones who have passed.
I believe there are guides associated with many different aspects of our lives.
Some may help us develop our intuition.
Others may support our creativity, communication, learning, or personal growth.
I also believe we may receive assistance from different guides at different times, depending on what we’re experiencing or trying to accomplish.
Think about an artist who suddenly knows exactly what color belongs on a canvas.
Or an inventor who wakes up with a solution to a problem that seemed impossible the night before.
Or a teacher who finds just the right words to reach a struggling student.
From my perspective, these may be moments when spiritual guidance and human awareness work together.
That doesn’t mean every good idea comes from a guide.
We have our own intelligence, creativity, and experience.
But I believe we’re not necessarily working alone.
And sometimes, the assistance we receive may be so subtle that we mistake it for an ordinary thought.
Public Speakers and the Words That Come From Nowhere
Public speaking offers another interesting example.
Imagine someone standing before a large audience.
They’ve prepared their remarks, practiced their presentation, and know exactly what they intend to say.
Then, in the middle of speaking, they suddenly depart from their notes.
They begin telling a story they hadn’t planned to share.
The words flow naturally.
The audience becomes completely engaged.
And afterward, someone approaches the speaker and says, “I needed to hear exactly what you said today.”
The speaker may be just as surprised as anyone else.
They might even admit, “I don’t know why I said that. It just came out.”
I find those moments fascinating.
Sometimes we seem to know what another person needs without consciously understanding how we know it.
Perhaps we’re responding to subtle cues, empathy, or our own accumulated experience.
But I also believe spiritual guidance may sometimes be involved.
In my understanding, guides don’t necessarily communicate by announcing themselves.
They may work through a sudden idea, a feeling, or words that arrive at precisely the right moment.
And we may not recognize the significance until afterward.
Even Driving Can Become an Intuitive Experience
Here’s an example that might surprise you.
Driving.
Most of us have experienced moments when we arrive somewhere and realize we barely remember the familiar route we just traveled.
Our minds were occupied with other thoughts while years of practice allowed us to navigate almost automatically.
That alone isn’t evidence of channeling. It’s a normal feature of learned behavior.
But there are other experiences that can feel different.
Perhaps you’ve had a sudden instinct to slow down, even though you couldn’t immediately explain why.
A moment later, a vehicle unexpectedly pulls into your lane.
Or you decide to take a different route home, only to discover later that your usual route was blocked.
Some people interpret experiences like these as intuition or spiritual guidance.
Others may point to subconscious awareness, experience, or coincidence.
I think it’s important to acknowledge those possibilities.
Still, from my spiritual perspective, I believe guidance can sometimes reach us through a quiet inner nudge.
Not every impression is a message from Spirit, and intuition should never replace careful attention or safe driving.
But I do believe there are moments when we respond to something before our conscious minds have fully processed it.
Have You Ever Said Something Completely Out of Character?
This may be one of the most relatable examples of all.
Have you ever said something that was completely unlike you, but afterward realized it was exactly what needed to be said?
Maybe you’re usually quiet and reserved, but suddenly find yourself speaking with unexpected confidence.
Perhaps a friend is struggling, and you offer advice that seems far wiser than anything you’d normally say.
Or you find yourself responding to a difficult situation with a level of compassion, clarity, or courage that surprises you.
Afterward, you wonder, “Where did that come from?”
I’ve always found experiences like these interesting.
Sometimes we rise to an occasion because we’re more capable than we realize.
But I also believe there are moments when spiritual guidance may help us access something we wouldn’t ordinarily recognize within ourselves.
The words don’t have to sound mystical.
They don’t have to come with visions, voices, or dramatic sensations.
Sometimes channeling may be as simple as allowing the right words to come forward without questioning them first.
And sometimes the person who benefits most from those words is someone we didn’t even realize needed to hear them.
Channeling and Mediumship: What’s the Difference?
As a psychic medium, I think it’s helpful to distinguish channeling from evidential mediumship.
In an evidential mediumship reading, my intention is to connect with a loved one in Spirit and provide recognizable details about their personality, relationships, memories, or experiences.
Those details help the person receiving the reading evaluate whether the information is meaningful to them.
Channeling, in its broader spiritual sense, doesn’t always involve communication with someone who has died.
It may involve inspiration, intuitive impressions, spiritual teachings, or creative ideas.
Someone might channel while writing music, painting, speaking, or working through a personal challenge.
A medium may also use channeling as part of their work, but the two terms aren’t necessarily interchangeable.
I believe the common thread is receptivity.
Rather than attempting to control every thought or impression, we allow ourselves to become open to information or inspiration.
And that brings us to an important question.
How Can You Become More Open to Channeling?
If channeling is something we can all experience, how do we become more aware of it?
I believe the first step is to stop assuming that spiritual experiences must be dramatic.
You don’t have to enter a trance, hear a voice, or see a spiritual figure standing in front of you.
Sometimes the most meaningful experiences are quiet and ordinary.
Start by noticing the activities that make you lose track of time.
Perhaps it’s gardening, painting, cooking, writing, singing, dancing, or working with your hands.
Pay attention to what happens when you’re completely immersed in something you enjoy.
Notice when ideas arrive unexpectedly.
Notice when you find yourself saying something that feels unusually insightful.
And notice the difference between forcing an outcome and allowing inspiration to develop naturally.
If you believe in spiritual guides, you might also begin by quietly inviting their assistance.
Before starting a creative project, you could simply say:
“To my guides who work with me in creativity and inspiration, I welcome your assistance. Help me remain open to ideas that serve my highest good.”
Then get on with your project.
Don’t sit around waiting for something extraordinary to happen.
Pick up the paintbrush.
Start writing.
Sing the song.
Work on the problem.
In my experience, spiritual development is often about participation rather than passive waiting.
You bring your intention and willingness, and you remain open to whatever inspiration may arise.
Discernment Is Just as Important as Openness
There’s something else I want to emphasize.
Being open to spiritual guidance doesn’t mean accepting every thought, feeling, or impulse as a message from Spirit.
We all have imaginations, emotions, subconscious associations, and moments of spontaneous insight.
Those are normal parts of being human.
I believe developing spiritually also involves learning to recognize our own patterns and exercising good judgment.
If an idea is helpful, creative, compassionate, and grounded, explore it.
If an impression feels frightening, controlling, or encourages you to do something unsafe, you don’t have to follow it.
And if you’re unsure where an idea originated, it’s perfectly acceptable not to know.
You can appreciate inspiration without needing to prove its source.
For me, genuine spiritual development should support our ability to think clearly and make responsible choices, not take those abilities away.
Maybe We’ve Been Channeling All Along
When I think about Billy Elliot describing the electricity he feels while dancing, or a writer becoming so absorbed in a story that the characters seem to take over, I see a common thread.
There are moments when we stop trying to control everything and simply allow ourselves to become part of the experience.
The dancer dances.
The writer writes.
The singer sings.
The speaker speaks.
And sometimes the result surprises everyone, including the person who created it.
I believe these experiences remind us that our potential may be much greater than we consciously recognize.
From my spiritual perspective, our guides are available to assist us in far more areas of life than we might imagine.
Not just during psychic readings.
Not just during meditation.
And not just when we’re seeking answers to life’s biggest questions.
I believe that assistance can be present in our creativity, our communication, our relationships, and the ordinary activities that make up our daily lives.
Perhaps channeling isn’t some rare ability reserved for a handful of gifted individuals.
Perhaps it’s something we’ve all experienced, but never thought to call by that name.
And perhaps the next time you lose yourself in something you love, you’ll recognize that feeling of electricity a little differently.
