People have been seeking guidance from beyond the ordinary senses for thousands of years.
Long before we used words like psychic, medium, clairvoyant, or intuitive, people were turning to oracles, mystics, prophets, seers, and spiritual practitioners for answers about their lives and what might exist beyond the physical world.
The names and practices have changed, but the questions really haven’t.
What happens after we die?
Can our loved ones still communicate with us?
Can we receive information intuitively?
Can someone perceive something about our lives that we haven’t told them?
And can spiritual guidance help us make better decisions while we’re here?
Some of history’s most fascinating figures became famous because they claimed the answer to at least some of those questions was yes.
Here are several people who helped shape the history of psychic ability, mediumship, and communication with Spirit.
The Oracle of Delphi: Seeking Guidance in the Ancient World
We can go back thousands of years and find people seeking what we might now call psychic or intuitive guidance.
One of the most famous examples was the Oracle of Delphi in ancient Greece.
The woman serving as the oracle was known as the Pythia. People traveled to Delphi seeking guidance on everything from personal matters to enormously important political and military decisions.
The practice was very different from a modern psychic reading, of course. But I find the underlying idea fascinating.
People believed there were ways of accessing knowledge beyond ordinary human reasoning.
That desire certainly hasn’t disappeared.
People still come to psychic readings today because there are times when logic alone doesn’t seem to provide the clarity they’re looking for.
Emanuel Swedenborg: A Mystic Who Said He Communicated With Spirits
Emanuel Swedenborg was born in Sweden in 1688.
What makes Swedenborg particularly interesting is that he wasn’t originally known primarily as a mystic. He was an intellectual who worked in areas including science, engineering, philosophy, and theology.
Later in his life, however, Swedenborg reported profound spiritual experiences.
He claimed that he could communicate with spirits and described elaborate experiences of the afterlife and spiritual realms.
His writings became enormously influential.
Whether someone accepts Swedenborg’s experiences literally or views them through a religious, psychological, or historical lens, his influence on later ideas about communication with Spirit is difficult to overlook.
His work would eventually influence people associated with the rise of Spiritualism in the 1800s.
Andrew Jackson Davis: The Poughkeepsie Seer
Another important figure was Andrew Jackson Davis, born in 1826.
Davis became known as the Poughkeepsie Seer and reported receiving spiritual information while in altered or trance-like states.
In 1847, he published The Principles of Nature, Her Divine Revelations, and a Voice to Mankind.
Davis believed communication between the physical and spiritual worlds was possible.
What’s particularly interesting is the timing.
Only a year later, events involving a family in New York would help ignite one of the largest spiritual movements of the nineteenth century.
The Fox Sisters and the Birth of Modern Spiritualism
In 1848, sisters Maggie and Kate Fox reported mysterious knocking or rapping sounds in their family’s home in Hydesville, New York.
The sounds were interpreted as attempts by a spirit to communicate.
The story spread.
Before long, the Fox Sisters were giving public demonstrations, and interest in communicating with the dead exploded throughout America and eventually overseas.
The movement became known as Modern Spiritualism.
This is also where the history gets complicated.
Decades later, Maggie Fox publicly stated that the rappings had been produced through trickery. She demonstrated how sounds could supposedly be created through movements of her joints. She later recanted that confession.
Historians continue to discuss the complicated story of the sisters, but one thing isn’t really in dispute:
Their story helped ignite an enormous cultural interest in mediumship.
By the late nineteenth century, séances, mediums, Spiritualist churches, and attempts at communication with the deceased had become widespread.
Daniel Dunglas Home: One of the Victorian Era’s Most Famous Mediums
Another extraordinary figure from this period was Daniel Dunglas Home, born in 1833.
Home became one of the most famous mediums of the Victorian era.
He claimed to communicate with spirits and became associated with dramatic physical-mediumship phenomena reported during séances.
Home moved among wealthy and influential circles and attracted both believers and skeptics.
That combination is something we see repeatedly throughout the history of mediumship.
Wherever there have been extraordinary claims, there have also been people trying to determine whether those claims were genuine.
I actually think skepticism can be healthy.
Mediumship shouldn’t require someone to abandon their judgment.
The information should be allowed to speak for itself.
Leonora Piper and the Investigation of Mediumship
One historical medium I find particularly interesting is Leonora Piper.
Piper became well known during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and attracted the attention of people investigating psychic phenomena.
Among those interested in her work was psychologist and philosopher William James.
Rather than simply asking people to believe stories about mediumship, researchers attempted to observe mediums and understand what was happening.
That distinction matters to me.
In evidential mediumship, I’m not interested in simply telling someone, “Your loved one is here.”
I want information.
Personality.
Relationships.
Memories.
Circumstances.
Details that help the sitter understand why I believe I’m connecting with a particular person.
The evidence is what makes evidential mediumship different from simply making a broad spiritual statement.
Edgar Cayce: The Sleeping Prophet
Moving into the twentieth century brings us to one of America’s most famous psychics: Edgar Cayce.
Cayce lived from 1877 to 1945 and became known as the Sleeping Prophet because he gave thousands of readings while in a sleep-like or trance state.
His readings covered an enormous range of subjects, including health, spirituality, reincarnation, dreams, and personal guidance.
Whatever conclusions someone reaches about Cayce’s abilities, his influence has been remarkable.
His name remains associated with psychic phenomena decades after his death, and records of many of his readings were preserved.
Psychic Ability and Mediumship Aren’t the Same Thing
Looking through this history also highlights something I talk about frequently with clients:
Psychic ability and mediumship are related, but they aren’t exactly the same thing.
A psychic reading generally focuses on you and your life.
That might involve relationships, career, moving, decisions, personal direction, or circumstances you’re currently navigating.
Mediumship has a different intention.
The purpose of an evidential mediumship reading is to communicate with loved ones who have passed and provide information that helps identify the person communicating.
Someone can be psychic without being a medium.
A medium generally uses intuitive or psychic senses as part of receiving information from Spirit.
Understanding that distinction can help you decide what kind of reading you’re actually looking for.
We’ve Been Asking the Same Questions for Thousands of Years
What fascinates me most about this history isn’t any single psychic or medium.
It’s the fact that the human desire to understand what exists beyond our ordinary senses keeps appearing across cultures and centuries.
Technology changes.
Religions change.
Cultures change.
The terminology changes.
But human beings continue asking many of the same questions.
Is there more to us than the physical body?
Does consciousness continue after death?
Can the people we love still reach us?
Can intuition show us something our logical mind hasn’t recognized yet?
For me, mediumship isn’t about having every answer to the mysteries of existence.
It’s about the connection.
When information comes through that means something deeply personal to the person sitting across from me—or speaking with me by phone or WhatsApp Video—that experience belongs to them.
And sometimes a moment of recognition is all someone needs to see life, death, and their connection with the people they love a little differently.
