Do You Have to Tell a Psychic Your Question?

Psychic medium reading in Palm Springs about love, career, life decisions, a new home, and spiritual direction.

One of the questions people sometimes have before a psychic reading is:

Do I have to tell you (a psychic) what I want to know?

The short answer is no.

You can sit down for a psychic reading without telling me your question and allow me to see what comes through.

But there’s a second part to my answer:

Sometimes telling me what you want to explore can help.

There’s an important difference between giving a psychic enough information to focus a reading and feeding the medium or psychic so much information that you’re essentially doing the reading for them.

You don’t need to tell me the entire story.

You don’t need to give me names, dates and every detail surrounding the situation.

And if something is deeply personal, you don’t necessarily need to tell me what happened at all.

Sometimes all I need is:

“I have a question about a relationship.”

Or:

“There’s a situation involving my family that I’d like some insight into.”

Or even:

“There’s something very personal I don’t want to explain. Can you tell me what you get around it?”

From there, let me do my job.

What Happens If You Don’t Tell Me Your Question?

When I tap into someone’s energy, I may become aware of several different things happening in that person’s life.

Or one particular issue may present itself strongly, and I’ll begin there and see where it leads.

The interesting part is that what comes through first isn’t necessarily what the client considers their most pressing concern.

You may have booked the reading because you’re worried about your relationship, but something surrounding your career immediately comes forward.

You may desperately want an answer about a move, while I keep getting information about something happening within your family.

Why?

There are several ways I look at that.

It may simply be the strongest thing I’m picking up in your energy at that moment.

It may be connected to something else that’s happening in your life.

And sometimes, particularly when Spirit becomes involved in a reading, the information that comes through may concern something Spirit apparently wants addressed, even though the sitter considers something else more important.

That doesn’t mean we can’t get to your question.

It simply means that if you don’t tell me what you’re looking for, I have to follow the information I’m receiving.

That’s one reason giving a psychic some direction can sometimes make the reading more useful.

You Can Give Me a Direction Without Giving Me the Answer

Suppose you have a complicated relationship situation.

You don’t need to spend ten minutes explaining:

“We’ve been together for three years, and last Thursday he said this, and then I said this, and his mother doesn’t like me, and six months ago this happened…”

You can simply say:

“I’d like some insight into my relationship.”

Then stop.

Let me tell you what I see.

The same applies to work.

Instead of telling me about your boss, the promotion you’re waiting for, the other company that contacted you and everything your coworkers have said, you can simply tell me:

“I have a question about my career.”

That’s enough.

You have directed my attention toward the area that matters to you without supplying all the information I’m supposed to be receiving intuitively.

What If You Don’t Want to Tell Me What’s Happening?

That’s perfectly fine too.

Sometimes the issue someone wants insight into is intensely personal.

They may not feel comfortable discussing it.

They may not be ready to say it out loud.

Or they may simply want insight without having to explain all the circumstances surrounding it.

I don’t need every detail.

If you want to keep the situation vague, I’ll keep it vague too.

My job is to give you as pointed and unambiguous an answer as I can based on the information I’m receiving—not force you to disclose something you aren’t comfortable sharing.

In fact, there have been times when I’ve become aware of deeply personal circumstances during a reading that helped me understand why the information I was receiving needed to be delivered with particular sensitivity.

Sometimes the Information Tells Me How to Deliver the Message

I once read for a man and became aware of information indicating that he had experienced serious trauma involving his father.

The information was extremely sensitive.

I didn’t need him to give me every detail of what had happened.

What mattered was understanding that there was a tremendous amount of pain attached to that relationship.

Having that insight changed the way I approached the information.

It allowed me to communicate more carefully and compassionately, and to focus on what might help him begin releasing some of the emotional weight he had been carrying.

For me, that’s an important part of psychic work.

Receiving information isn’t enough.

How you deliver that information matters too.

A psychic reading shouldn’t unnecessarily expose someone, embarrass them or force them to discuss something they’re not ready to discuss.

Sometimes understanding what’s underneath the surface simply allows me to meet the person where they are.

Yes, People Test Psychics

And that’s okay.

People are curious.

Some people are skeptical.

Some people want evidence before they’ll trust the reading.

And sometimes the tests are wonderfully strange.

I once had a client ask me:

“What did I do with my family member in Palm Springs that was so funny?”

That’s all I had.

Almost immediately, my nose started itching.

Then I sneezed.

As I continued feeling into the client’s energy, my nose kept itching.

I kept rubbing it.

It seemed completely random.

Eventually, we discovered why.

The funny memory involved a photograph of my sitter picking the nose of a statue.

Of all the things someone could ask me to identify, that certainly wasn’t one I could have anticipated.

It also wasn’t an earth-shattering revelation about someone’s future.

There was no career prediction.

No relationship question.

No major life decision.

Just somebody picking a statue’s nose.

And I actually love that example because psychic information doesn’t always have to be dramatic to be meaningful—or remarkably specific.

Sometimes the smallest, strangest detail can provide validation precisely because it’s so unlikely.

But Don’t Turn the Entire Reading Into a Test

There’s nothing wrong with wanting validation.

In fact, I think validation is important.

But there’s a difference between allowing a psychic to demonstrate the connection and spending your entire session testing them.

If I spend 45 minutes proving that I know things you haven’t told me, we’ve potentially lost 45 minutes that could have been spent helping you with the reason you came to me.

Tests are fine. So are assists.

There’s a balance.

Give your psychic enough room to work without making the reading an interrogation.

And don’t feel that you have to withhold your actual question simply because you’re afraid that telling them anything will somehow invalidate the reading.

Don’t Feed the Medium

On the opposite end of the spectrum is giving the psychic or medium too much information.

If I’m bringing up something specific, allow me to fill in the gaps.

You don’t have to rescue me.

You don’t have to make the information fit.

And you definitely don’t need to tell me the entire story the moment I touch on something familiar.

If I ask:

“Does this make sense?”

A simple yes, no or I don’t know is usually enough unless I ask you for more information.

If I need clarification, I’ll ask.

This is particularly important during evidential mediumship.

If I’m describing someone in Spirit, I want the information identifying that person to come from the connection—not from you giving me their biography.

Let the psychic or medium do some work.

Sometimes You Don’t Even Have to Ask

Not every meaningful psychic or mediumship experience begins with a formal reading.

Months ago, I was standing in line for a movie when I became aware of a woman near me—and the presence of her deceased son.

There was nobody else immediately around us.

I approached her and told her that I felt her son was with her. I asked whether she wanted to know what I was receiving.

She said yes.

As I continued, I became aware that there weren’t just one, but two sons in Spirit.

I didn’t need to know the circumstances of their deaths.

I didn’t ask her to explain what had happened.

The message was what mattered.

What I received was that both of her sons wanted her to stop blaming herself for their passing.

They wanted her to know that she was a good mother.

They wanted her to understand that she was worthy of happiness and that she didn’t need to continue punishing herself.

They wanted her to stop being so hard on herself.

She confided in me that this was exactly what she needed to hear.

That experience has stayed with me.

Not because I knew every detail of her story.

I didn’t.

And I didn’t need to.

Sometimes the information that’s needed is more important than knowing the entire story behind it.

A Psychic Reading Is a Conversation—but It Isn’t an Interview

I think this is probably the best way to explain my approach.

A psychic reading isn’t an interrogation where you’re forbidden from speaking.

But it also shouldn’t be an interview where you give me all the information and I repeat it back to you.

It’s a conversation.

If there’s something specific you want to know, ask me.

If you’d rather not tell me the question initially, that’s okay too.

If the subject is deeply personal, tell me as much—or as little—as you’re comfortable sharing.

If I need clarification, I’ll ask.

If something comes through that doesn’t make sense, tell me you don’t know.

And if I start describing something accurately, resist the temptation to immediately fill in every blank.

Give the information room to develop.

So, Do You Have to Tell a Psychic Your Question?

No.

But sometimes it helps.

If you don’t tell me your question, I’ll begin with what I’m receiving and follow the information from there.

Sometimes that leads directly to the issue you wanted to discuss.

Sometimes something completely different appears first.

And sometimes what seems less important to you may be what comes through most strongly.

If you have one particular issue that’s weighing heavily on you, there’s nothing wrong with telling me:

“This is what I’d like some insight into.”

You aren’t ruining the reading.

You aren’t giving away the answer.

You’re simply helping me understand where you’d like us to focus our time.

Then let me fill in the blanks.
