Have you ever dreamed about someone you love who has passed and awakened with the feeling that the experience was somehow different from an ordinary dream?
Maybe your loved one walked into the room, looked directly at you, smiled—and then walked away.
Maybe they stood beside you and seemed completely happy and at peace.
Or perhaps they said something, but no matter how hard you tried, you couldn’t quite hear the words.
People sometimes wake from these dreams frustrated.
“Why didn’t they say anything?”
“Why couldn’t I hear them?”
“If that was really my loved one, why didn’t they give me a message?”
But what if they did?
One of the things I’ve learned through mediumship is that communication with Spirit doesn’t always happen through words. In fact, some of the most meaningful communication can come through a feeling or a sudden knowing rather than something we hear.
That may be especially important when we experience our loved ones in dreams.
Can Loved Ones Who Have Passed Visit Us in Dreams?
Many spiritual traditions and people who have experienced bereavement describe dreams in which someone who has died seems to visit them.
Whether you call these visitation dreams, Spirit dreams, after-death communication, or simply a meaningful dream is ultimately up to you.
I can’t prove that every dream involving someone who has passed is a literal visit from Spirit. I also don’t believe every dream about a deceased loved one necessarily needs to be interpreted that way.
Our minds process memories, emotions and grief while we sleep. Naturally, people who have played important roles in our lives can appear in our dreams.
But sometimes a dream feels different.
You wake up and don’t simply remember dreaming about the person.
You feel as though you were with them.
And sometimes that feeling stays with you for years.
Why Does My Loved One Just Smile at Me in a Dream?
This is something people ask me about frequently.
They’ll tell me:
“My mother came into the room. She looked at me and smiled. Then she left.”
Or:
“My husband was standing there smiling at me, but he wouldn’t say anything.”
The person telling me the story may feel disappointed because they expected more.
I look at it differently.
Think about what a smile can communicate without a single word.
I’m okay.
I’m happy.
I’m still me.
It’s okay for you to be happy, too.
I’m glad to see you.
I love you.
The exact meaning is going to depend on the person, the relationship and what you experienced during the dream. I wouldn’t automatically assign one interpretation to every smile.
But I would pay very close attention to how you felt when they smiled at you.
Did you immediately feel peaceful?
Did you somehow know they were okay?
Did their smile make you feel loved?
Did you wake up knowing something you hadn’t known before you went to sleep?
That feeling may have been the communication.
What If They Speak but I Can’t Hear Them?
Here’s another experience I hear about.
A loved one appears in a dream and begins speaking, but you can’t understand what they’re saying.
Their mouth may be moving, but there is no sound.
Or you hear something but can’t remember the words after waking.
It’s easy to assume something went wrong.
But again, I wouldn’t become overly focused on the missing words.
Ask yourself:
What did I know while they were speaking?
Perhaps you couldn’t hear your father saying, “I’m okay.”
But somehow you knew he was okay.
Maybe you couldn’t hear your mother saying she loved you.
But you felt completely surrounded by her love.
Which was the message—the words you couldn’t hear or the love you could feel?
I would argue that sometimes the feeling and the knowing are the message.
We Expect Spirit to Communicate Like We Do
As human beings, we’re accustomed to language.
Someone asks us a question. We answer.
Someone calls us. We hear their voice.
Someone wants us to know something. They tell us.
So naturally, when people think about communication with Spirit, they often imagine hearing a voice.
“Tell me you’re okay.”
“Tell me you’re still around.”
“Say something so I’ll know it’s really you.”
But mediumistic and psychic information doesn’t always arrive like a telephone conversation.
Information can be experienced through images, memories, sensations, emotions, symbols, thoughts, impressions and sudden knowledge.
That’s true during my mediumship work, and I believe it’s worth remembering when looking at dreams involving loved ones in Spirit.
Sometimes we’re waiting for a voice while overlooking everything else that’s being communicated.
Clairsentience: When the Feeling Is the Message
Clairsentience is often described as receiving intuitive or psychic information through feeling.
I think of it as a feeling that seems to arrive with information attached to it.
It may resemble a gut instinct, but there’s often something about it that feels different from your ordinary emotional reaction to a situation.
You might suddenly feel peaceful when there isn’t an obvious reason for the change.
You may sense someone’s presence.
You might experience an emotion that seems to arrive unexpectedly.
Or you simply feel that something is right—or wrong—before you can logically explain why.
In a dream involving someone in Spirit, clairsentience may be especially important.
You may wake without remembering a single word.
But you remember exactly how you felt.
Don’t automatically dismiss that.
Claircognizance: When You Simply Know
Then there’s claircognizance, which I often describe as knowing without knowing how you know.
There isn’t necessarily a voice.
There isn’t necessarily an image.
You may not be able to point to anything that gave you the information.
You simply know.
This can be frustrating because our logical minds immediately want evidence.
“Why do I know that?”
“Where did that thought come from?”
“How could I possibly know this?”
And sometimes there isn’t an obvious answer.
That’s what makes claircognizance interesting.
After a dream about a loved one, you may wake up thinking:
He’s okay.
You may not know why.
Maybe he never said it.
Maybe nothing dramatic happened in the dream.
He simply looked at you.
But you woke up knowing he was okay.
That knowing deserves your attention.
You May Be Listening With the Wrong Clair
People sometimes assume psychic or Spirit communication should primarily involve clairaudience—receiving information through an inner sense of hearing.
But not everyone experiences intuitive information most strongly that way.
For many people, clairsentience and claircognizance may feel much more natural.
That’s one reason I wouldn’t judge the importance of a dream by how much conversation took place.
Your loved one may not need to deliver a five-minute speech.
Their presence may be enough.
Their smile may be enough.
The peace you experience may be enough.
The sudden certainty that they’re okay may be enough.
We sometimes become so focused on what we wanted to hear that we miss what we actually received.
What If Your Loved One Does Speak?
Then consider yourself fortunate—and listen!
Sometimes people report incredibly clear conversations with loved ones who have passed.
A loved one may say they’re okay.
They may offer reassurance.
They may say something funny that perfectly fits their personality.
They may give advice or simply say, “I love you.”
Those experiences can be incredibly meaningful.
But even when you receive clear words, I would still encourage you to look deeper.
How did you feel while they were speaking?
What did you know without being told?
What was different about their appearance or energy?
What did you understand when you woke up?
The spoken message may only be one part of the experience.
There could be another layer hiding within the feeling or knowing.
Pay Attention Before You Analyze the Dream
If you have one of these dreams, I’d suggest resisting the temptation to immediately search the internet for the meaning of every object, color or symbol.
Before someone else tells you what your dream supposedly means, ask yourself what you experienced.
When you wake up, write down what you remember.
Then write down something even more important:
How did I feel?
And:
What did I know?
Don’t try to make the answers more impressive.
If all you know is:
“Mom was happy.”
Write that.
If you felt:
“Dad was still Dad.”
Write it.
If you suddenly knew:
“She’s still around me.”
Write that.
Those simple impressions may ultimately be more meaningful than trying to decode whether the blue curtains in the background had some universal spiritual significance.
You Don’t Have to Force the Experience
Grief can make us desperately want contact.
That’s understandable.
But I don’t believe you need to go to sleep every night demanding that someone appear.
You can simply create space.
Before going to sleep, you might quietly think about your loved one.
Talk to them if that feels natural.
Tell them you love them.
You might even say:
“If you’re able to visit me, I’d love to see you.”
Then let it go.
Don’t decide that you’ve failed—or that your loved one isn’t around—if nothing happens that night.
Dreams aren’t something we can always command.
And neither is Spirit.
Sometimes the Simplest Message Is the Most Important
When someone we love dies, we often have enormous questions.
Where are you?
Are you okay?
Can you see me?
Do you still love me?
Are you still part of my life?
We imagine that answering those questions would require an extraordinary conversation.
And then one night, they appear.
They don’t explain the universe.
They don’t tell us what happens after death.
They don’t deliver a twenty-minute message from the other side.
They simply look at us.
And smile.
Maybe that’s not an absence of communication.
Maybe, sometimes, that’s the entire message.
Would You Like to Connect With Someone in Spirit?
If you’ve experienced dreams, feelings, signs or a sense that a loved one who has passed may still be around you, an evidential mediumship reading can offer an opportunity to explore that connection.
During my readings, I look for specific information and evidence that can help identify the person in Spirit and provide validation of the connection.
I also welcome questions. If there is someone specific you hope to hear from, you’re welcome to tell me.
While no medium can guarantee that a particular person will communicate during a reading, being open to the experience can help create space for whatever information comes through.
