Why Children Often Sense Spirit More Easily Than Adults

Children celebrating a birthday in a sunny park while loving grandparents in Spirit watch over them. High Desert Medium explores why children often sense Spirit more easily than adults through compassionate evidential mediumship.

Parents will tell me stories about their young son talking to an invisible friend, or their daughter waving to someone no one else can see. Sometimes children describe a grandparent they never met or mention details that leave their parents wondering how they could possibly know them.

Whether you view these experiences as imagination, intuition, or genuine encounters with Spirit, one thing is clear:

Children often experience the world very differently than adults do.

Children Haven’t Learned to Doubt Themselves

One of the greatest differences between children and adults is that children haven’t yet been taught to question every experience.

If a child sees something unusual, they simply accept it as part of their world.

Adults, on the other hand, immediately begin analyzing.

“Did I imagine that?”

“I’m probably just tired.”

“There has to be a logical explanation.”

Critical thinking is valuable, but it can also become so dominant that we dismiss experiences before we’ve had a chance to explore them.

Children don’t usually have that filter.

They’re naturally curious.

Their Imaginations Are Wide Open

People often assume imagination and intuition are opposites.

I don’t see them that way.

Imagination is one of the ways our minds create images, stories, and possibilities. Mediumship also involves receiving images, impressions, symbols, and emotions that must be interpreted.

That doesn’t mean every imaginary friend is a spirit or that every unusual experience has a supernatural explanation.

It simply means children haven’t built the rigid mental walls that many adults develop over time.

They’re comfortable living in a world where possibilities still exist.

Children Live in the Present Moment

Young children spend very little time worrying about yesterday or tomorrow.

They’re immersed in the present.

As adults, our minds are often occupied with:

  • Paying bills
  • Deadlines
  • Responsibilities
  • News
  • Phones
  • Endless to-do lists

It’s difficult to notice subtle impressions when our attention is constantly divided.

Many people tell me they experience their strongest intuitive moments during quiet walks, meditation, or simply sitting peacefully in nature.

Children naturally spend much of their day in that kind of present awareness.

We Teach Children What to Ignore

Imagine a child saying,

“Grandma came to see me last night.”

Some parents respond with curiosity.

Others quickly say,

“It was only a dream.”

Or,

“You’re imagining things.”

Most parents mean well. They want to comfort their children or help them understand the world.

Over time, however, children begin learning which experiences are considered acceptable to talk about—and which ones are not.

Many adults later tell me,

“I used to experience things when I was little, but it all seemed to disappear as I got older.”

Perhaps some of those experiences disappeared.

Or perhaps they simply stopped paying attention to them.

Does Everyone Lose Their Intuition?

I don’t believe so.

One of the ideas I return to often is this:

We are Spirit first.

If that’s true, then intuition isn’t something we acquire.

It’s something we already possess.

Life simply becomes very loud.

Responsibilities grow.

Stress increases.

Our attention shifts almost entirely toward the physical world.

That doesn’t mean intuition is gone.

It may simply become quieter beneath the noise of everyday life.

Becoming Childlike Isn’t Becoming Childish

There’s an important difference.

I’m not suggesting adults should believe every unusual experience without question.

Healthy skepticism has its place.

What I am suggesting is that we can rediscover some of the qualities children naturally possess:

Curiosity.

Wonder.

Presence.

Openness.

The willingness to ask,

“What if?”

Without immediately dismissing the possibility.

Those qualities often create space for intuition to become more noticeable.

Spirit Speaks Gently

One thing I’ve learned over years of working with Spirit is that communication is often subtle.

It may arrive as:

  • A quiet thought.
  • A meaningful coincidence.
  • A dream.
  • A familiar scent.
  • A sudden memory.
  • An overwhelming feeling of peace.

Children often notice these gentle experiences because they’re already paying attention.

Adults can learn to notice them again.

Your Intuition Has Never Left You

If you’ve ever wondered why children seem naturally intuitive, perhaps the better question is this:

What happened to ours?

I don’t believe we lose our connection to Spirit.

I believe we gradually stop listening.

The beautiful news is that intuition can be strengthened at any age.

By slowing down.

Remaining curious.

Practicing awareness.

And allowing ourselves to notice the quiet moments that often pass unnoticed.

The child within us may still recognize Spirit.

Sometimes we simply need to remember how to listen.
