Mediumship Is Older Than Most People Realize
Long before the modern Spiritualist movement of the 1800s, nearly every ancient civilization believed in some form of communication with the spirit world.
The ancient Egyptians believed the soul survived death.
The Greeks consulted oracles for spiritual wisdom.
Many Indigenous cultures honored ancestors and believed they continued to guide the living.
Ancient cultures throughout Asia, Africa, and Europe all developed traditions recognizing that death was not necessarily the end of existence.
Although their beliefs differed, one idea remained remarkably consistent:
Life continues.
Mediumship in the Bible
One of the questions I’m asked most often is,
“Does the Bible mention mediumship?”
The answer is yes.
The Bible contains several accounts involving communication with the spiritual world, though they are presented in different ways and within different theological contexts.
One of the most well-known is found in 1 Samuel 28, where King Saul visits the Medium of Endor seeking guidance after feeling abandoned by God. The account describes the spirit of the prophet Samuel appearing and speaking with Saul.
Whether one interprets this passage as a literal spirit communication, a unique divine event, or something else depends on one’s religious tradition. What is clear is that the story itself involves an encounter presented as communication with someone who had died.
Another significant moment occurs in the New Testament during the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1–9, Mark 9:2–8, and Luke 9:28–36), where Jesus’ disciples witness Him speaking with Moses and Elijah. Both figures are recognized by the disciples despite belonging to an earlier era.
These passages have been understood in many different ways throughout Christian history, but they show that the Bible contains accounts involving the continued existence of individuals beyond physical death.
Love Is the Common Thread
Regardless of one’s religious beliefs, one thing becomes clear throughout history.
People have always hoped that death is not the end.
Why?
Because love doesn’t simply disappear.
When we lose someone we deeply love, our relationship changes—but our love for them continues.
Many people come to a medium not because they’re seeking entertainment, but because they’re longing for reassurance that the bond they shared still exists in some meaningful way.
