Mention psychic ability in certain company and you’re likely to get a familiar reaction.
Some people are fascinated. Some are curious. And others immediately dismiss the entire subject as impossible.
I’ve always found that interesting.
Especially considering that for more than two decades, agencies within the United States government spent time and resources investigating something remarkably similar to what psychics describe every day: the ability to obtain information without using the ordinary five senses.
The research became associated with what we now commonly call remote viewing.
And unlike many stories surrounding psychic phenomena, this one isn’t based solely on rumors or conspiracy theories.
There are thousands of pages of declassified government documents about it.
What Is Remote Viewing?
Remote viewing is generally described as attempting to perceive information about a distant or unseen target without having normal sensory access to it.
A person might be given coordinates, a coded target, or another limited piece of information and then asked to describe impressions about a location, object, person, or situation they cannot physically see.
Those impressions might appear as images, shapes, colors, textures, sounds, sensations, or simply an internal sense of knowing.
If that sounds somewhat familiar, there’s a reason.
Many of those experiences resemble what psychics call clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, and claircognizance.
The terminology may be different, but the basic question is remarkably similar:
Can human consciousness obtain information beyond what is immediately available through our physical senses?
The Government Actually Investigated the Question
In 1972, the CIA became involved in research at Stanford Research Institute—now SRI International—examining remote viewing and related phenomena.
The CIA says its own direct research ended in 1977, after which government involvement continued through organizations including the Defense Intelligence Agency and the U.S. Army. Eventually these efforts became associated with Project STARGATE. The broader government involvement continued until 1995.
This wasn’t simply people sitting around discussing whether psychic abilities might exist.
Remote viewers were actually given intelligence-related assignments.
Declassified records include remote-viewing sessions connected with real-world targets. One 1980 report, for example, documents a session requested in connection with the hostage situation at the U.S. Embassy in Iran.
Another declassified training session records something particularly interesting. The coordinates supplied for the intended target were incorrect. According to the session report, the viewer’s description instead appeared to correspond to the geographic location indicated by the mistaken coordinates rather than the location the experimenters originally intended.
Whether you consider that evidence of psychic perception or simply an intriguing experimental result, it’s certainly interesting.
Why Would Intelligence Agencies Take Psychic Phenomena Seriously?
This may be the most fascinating part of the story.
Intelligence agencies don’t necessarily investigate something because they’ve already decided it’s true.
They investigate possibilities.
During the Cold War, the potential question was obvious: What if this worked?
If someone could obtain useful information about a distant military installation, hidden object, foreign operation, or other inaccessible target without physically being there, the intelligence implications would be enormous.
And if another country were developing such capabilities, the United States certainly wouldn’t want to ignore the possibility.
So they investigated.
And they kept investigating for years.
What Did They Find?
This is where I think we need to be careful not to turn an interesting story into something it isn’t.
The government’s research did not ultimately establish remote viewing as a reliable intelligence-gathering tool.
When the CIA commissioned an independent review in 1995, the experts themselves disagreed about what the experimental evidence meant.
Statistician Jessica Utts argued that the evidence supported the existence of anomalous psychic functioning. Psychologist Ray Hyman disagreed that the research justified that conclusion.
The overall evaluation concluded that remote viewing had not demonstrated the reliability and consistency necessary to make it useful for intelligence operations, and the government program was discontinued.
That’s an important distinction.
Unreliable does not necessarily mean that nothing interesting ever happened.
Even the CIA’s own modern summary says there were enough apparently accurate remote-viewing experiences to exceed what would be expected randomly, while emphasizing that the results were too inconsistent and sporadic for intelligence purposes.
And frankly, that part fascinates me.
Psychic Ability Doesn’t Work Like a Telephone
As a practicing psychic medium, one of the misconceptions I encounter is the expectation that psychic information should operate exactly like our physical senses.
If psychic perception exists, the argument goes, a psychic should be able to produce specific information perfectly, every single time.
But that’s not how I experience psychic information.
Information can arrive symbolically.
An image may flash into my awareness.
I may suddenly know something without knowing why.
I may feel an emotion or physical sensation associated with someone.
A word, name, memory, place, or image may enter my mind.
And then I have to interpret it.
That’s one reason I find the history of remote viewing so interesting. Researchers were attempting to take something inherently subjective and intuitive and evaluate it under controlled conditions.
That’s extraordinarily difficult.
Remote Viewing and Psychic Readings Aren’t Exactly the Same Thing
It’s also important not to confuse remote viewing with every form of psychic or mediumistic work.
They’re related concepts, but they aren’t identical.
Remote viewing was developed around structured attempts to perceive information about a target.
A psychic reading is usually much broader.
When I’m working psychically with a client, I’m tuning into the person’s life and circumstances. Information may relate to relationships, career, decisions, emotional patterns, opportunities, or situations surrounding them.
Mediumship is different again because the intention is communication with someone in Spirit.
But all three raise a fascinating possibility:
Perhaps consciousness is capable of receiving information in ways we don’t completely understand.
We Don’t Have to Pretend We Know Everything
I think people sometimes believe they have to choose between two extremes.
Either psychic ability has been scientifically proven beyond any doubt—or it’s complete nonsense.
I don’t think those are our only choices.
Human consciousness remains extraordinarily complex.
There are things we understand extremely well and other things we’re still trying to understand.
The history of remote viewing doesn’t prove every psychic claim.
It certainly doesn’t prove that every person calling themselves a psychic is legitimate.
What it does demonstrate is that serious people within the U.S. government considered the possibility interesting enough to investigate for more than twenty years.
And after all that research, the conclusion wasn’t simply, “Nothing happened.”
It was much more complicated than that.
Experience It for Yourself
Ultimately, psychic work is something many people understand best through personal experience.
You don’t have to believe everything.
You don’t have to abandon skepticism.
And you certainly shouldn’t surrender your judgment or decision-making to a psychic.
Come with an open mind and see whether the information connects with your life.
A psychic reading can provide insight into relationships, career, decisions, life transitions, and the possibilities surrounding you.
And sometimes experiencing information that couldn’t easily have been known beforehand can leave you asking a very interesting question:
How did they know that?
