By High Desert Medium | Palm Springs Psychic Medium

If you’re considering a mediumship reading, you may wonder if there’s anything you could do that would prevent your loved ones in Spirit from coming through. It’s a question I hear often, and the answer may surprise you.
The good news is that most people are not intentionally blocking Spirit. In fact, your loved ones in Spirit want to connect with you. They come with love, healing, encouragement, and often evidence that they are still very much a part of your life.
However, there are times when our own emotions, expectations, or anxiety can make it more difficult for us to recognize or receive the communication taking place. That doesn’t mean Spirit has stopped trying. It simply means that creating a more open and relaxed environment can make the connection flow more naturally.
Spirit Is Always Working Toward Connection
One of the biggest misconceptions about mediumship is that Spirit either “shows up” or they don’t. In reality, mediumship is a blending of energies between the medium, the sitter (the person receiving the reading), and those in Spirit.
Your loved ones don’t lose their desire to communicate because you’re nervous. They understand your grief, your excitement, and even your skepticism. They know you’re human.
My role as a Psychic Medium is to blend with Spirit and share the evidence, memories, personalities, and messages they bring forward. The more open and relaxed everyone is during the reading, the easier that blending often becomes.
Expectations Can Sometimes Get in the Way
Many people come into a reading hoping to hear from one specific person.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
In fact, your desire to connect with someone in particular can strengthen your intention and your emotional focus. I’ve written before about how holding that intention can support the flow of information.
However, it’s also important to remain open.
Sometimes the person you hope to hear from comes through immediately. Other times another loved one steps forward first because they have something meaningful to share or because they’re better able to establish the connection at that moment.
Keeping an open mind allows Spirit to communicate in the way that best serves your highest good.
Anxiety Can Make It Harder to Relax
It’s perfectly normal to feel nervous before a reading.
Many clients wonder:
- “What if nothing happens?”
- “What if I cry?”
- “What if my loved one doesn’t come through?”
These thoughts are understandable.
The challenge is that anxiety often causes us to become mentally busy. Instead of simply experiencing the reading, we begin evaluating every statement, wondering what comes next, or worrying about the outcome.
When you’re able to relax and simply allow the experience to unfold, you often find yourself recognizing evidence and messages more naturally.
Trying Too Hard
Believe it or not, trying too hard can sometimes work against you.
Some clients spend the entire reading mentally searching for every detail before I’ve finished speaking. Others become so focused on hearing one particular name or message that they unintentionally overlook everything else Spirit is offering.
Spirit often communicates in layers.
A small memory may lead to a larger memory.
A nickname may open the door to an important life event.
A favorite object may become the evidence that removes all doubt.
Trusting the process allows those pieces to come together naturally.
Skepticism Isn’t the Enemy
People sometimes ask if being skeptical blocks a reading.
Not at all.
Healthy skepticism is completely normal.
You don’t have to believe everything before your reading begins. In fact, many of my clients arrive with questions, uncertainty, or curiosity.
What matters is being willing to listen.
An open mind is very different from blind belief.
You don’t need to force yourself to believe anything. Simply allow yourself to experience the reading and evaluate the evidence as it unfolds.
Grief Can Affect the Experience
Grief affects every person differently.
Some people feel numb.
Others feel overwhelmed.
Some have spent years hoping for another conversation with someone they deeply love.
Your emotions are never wrong.
Spirit understands your grief better than anyone because they continue to love you. They know how much you miss them, and they often bring messages intended to comfort, reassure, and remind you that your relationship has not ended.
Sometimes those moments become the most healing part of the reading.
Openness Creates the Best Environment
Being open doesn’t mean lowering your standards.
It doesn’t mean agreeing with everything you hear.
It simply means allowing yourself to receive the experience without placing unnecessary pressure on yourself or on Spirit.
The more relaxed, present, and open you are, the easier it often becomes for meaningful information to flow.
Remember, mediumship is not about perfection. It’s about connection.
Spirit Wants You to Heal
One thing I’ve learned through years of providing mediumship readings is that Spirit is remarkably patient.
Your loved ones don’t stop loving you because you’re nervous.
They don’t disappear because you’re grieving.
They don’t give up because you’re skeptical.
Instead, they continue looking for opportunities to remind you that love survives physical death.
That reminder can bring comfort, healing, peace, and hope in ways that are difficult to describe until you’ve experienced it for yourself.
