There is a lot happening in the world right now that can leave us feeling overwhelmed.
Anger. Division. Fear. Grief. Conflict. Uncertainty. People seem increasingly disconnected from one another, even though technology has made us more connected than at any other time in history.
It can be tempting to look at everything happening around us and wonder:
What can one person possibly do about any of this?
I believe the answer begins much closer to home than we sometimes realize.
It begins with our own energy.
We may not be able to heal the entire world individually. But every one of us contributes something to the collective energy around us through our thoughts, our words, our actions, our intentions, and the way we treat other people.
If we want a more peaceful world, perhaps one of the places to begin is by creating more peace within ourselves.
If we want more kindness, we can become kinder.
If we want more understanding, we can try to understand.
If we want more love in the world, we can become one more source of it.
Healing doesn’t only happen somewhere else.
It starts with us.
Your Energy Goes With You
Think about people you’ve encountered who completely changed the atmosphere of a room simply by entering it.
Some people make us feel comfortable almost immediately. Others leave us feeling tense or exhausted.
Sometimes nothing obvious has even happened.
We simply feel something.
Whether you understand that spiritually, psychologically, emotionally, or energetically, we affect one another.
That’s why I believe becoming conscious of our own energy is so important.
What are we carrying into our conversations?
What are we contributing when we enter a room?
What do we leave behind after interacting with someone?
We don’t have to be positive every second of every day. That’s neither realistic nor healthy. Anger, sadness, frustration and grief are part of being human.
Purifying our energy doesn’t mean suppressing those emotions.
It means becoming conscious enough that we don’t continually pass our pain on to everyone around us.
Good Thoughts Matter
Our thoughts create the internal environment in which we live.
If we’re constantly criticizing ourselves, judging others, expecting the worst, replaying old grievances or consuming things that keep us angry, that becomes part of our everyday experience.
Changing that doesn’t mean pretending everything is wonderful.
It means becoming more selective about what we feed.
When you notice yourself falling into a negative thought pattern, ask:
Is this thought helping me?
Is it true?
Is there another way I could look at this?
What kind of energy do I want to bring into this situation?
Sometimes healing begins with something as simple as choosing not to add another negative thought to the pile.
Good Deeds Change Energy Too
Spirituality isn’t only meditation, prayer, crystals or communication with Spirit.
Sometimes spirituality looks very ordinary.
Helping someone.
Calling a lonely friend.
Giving someone the benefit of the doubt.
Feeding an animal.
Picking up something someone dropped.
Being patient with an overwhelmed employee.
Giving anonymously.
Apologizing.
Forgiving.
Listening.
A good deed doesn’t have to change the entire world.
It changes one moment in the world.
And those moments accumulate.
Remembering Our Oneness
One of the most powerful spiritual ideas found in different forms across many traditions is that our separateness may not be as absolute as it appears.
We are individuals, certainly.
But we are also interconnected.
We breathe the same atmosphere. We depend upon the same planet. Our choices affect people we’ll never meet. Something that happens on one side of the world can affect lives thousands of miles away.
Spiritually, many people take that idea even further.
They believe consciousness itself connects us.
If we begin seeing humanity as one enormous family rather than a collection of competing groups, something changes.
Hurting someone else becomes harder to justify.
Their suffering matters.
Their happiness matters.
Their healing matters.
And so does ours.
Cleaning Your Own Energy
Just as we shower, clean our homes and wash our clothes, I think it can be helpful to develop practices that help us feel energetically refreshed.
You don’t need to make this complicated.
A shower can become an energetic cleansing ritual. As the water moves over you, imagine tension, worry and unwanted energy washing away.
Spend time outside. Walk barefoot on the earth if that’s comfortable for you. Sit beneath a tree. Stand in sunlight. Spend a few minutes somewhere quiet without your phone.
Meditation and breathwork can also help us become aware of what we’re carrying.
Some people enjoy smoke cleansing, sound, prayer, visualization, salt baths or other practices rooted in their own spiritual or cultural traditions.
The particular ritual matters less to me than the intention behind it:
I’m releasing what I no longer need to carry.
Working With Energy Healers and Energy Workers
Sometimes we want support in that process.
There are many forms of energy work, including Reiki and other spiritual or holistic practices designed to promote relaxation, balance and a sense of well-being.
People often describe feeling calmer, lighter, more centered or emotionally released after energy work.
I think it’s important to approach this responsibly. Energy work can be a meaningful spiritual or complementary wellness practice, but it shouldn’t replace appropriate medical or mental-health care when those are needed.
A good practitioner should never frighten you by claiming that you have dangerous entities, curses or negative attachments that can only be removed if you pay an enormous amount of money.
Healing shouldn’t begin with fear.
Look for someone who makes you feel respected, empowered and safe.
The Power and Symbolism of Crystals
Crystals have been used in spiritual and ceremonial practices across cultures for a very long time.
Different stones are traditionally associated with different intentions.
Rose quartz is commonly associated with love and compassion.
Clear quartz is often used for clarity and intention.
Amethyst is frequently associated with calm, intuition and spiritual awareness.
Black tourmaline is commonly used symbolically for grounding and protection.
Scientifically, crystals haven’t been established as sources of healing energy capable of treating disease. But that doesn’t mean they can’t have personal, spiritual or ritual significance.
A crystal can become a physical reminder of an intention.
You might hold rose quartz during meditation and think:
Today I choose to lead with love.
Every time you see it afterward, you’re reminded of that choice.
There can be power in consciously directing our attention.
Charging Your Drinking Water
Another spiritual practice some people enjoy is setting an intention for the water they drink.
This doesn’t require believing that water has acquired medically healing properties.
Instead, think of it as a mindfulness ritual.
Before drinking your water, pause for a moment.
Hold the glass or bottle and choose an intention.
Peace.
Love.
Healing.
Gratitude.
Clarity.
You might simply say:
“May this water nourish my body, mind and spirit.”
Then drink it consciously.
You can also place your water in moonlight or near crystals if those practices have meaning for you. If you do use crystals around water, keep them outside the container unless you know with certainty that the particular mineral is safe—some stones can contain substances that shouldn’t be consumed.
The point isn’t magical water.
The point is bringing intention into something you already do every day.
Protect What You Allow Into Your Energy
Energetic cleansing isn’t only about removing something.
It’s also about deciding what you continually let in.
Pay attention to how you feel after watching certain programs, scrolling social media, reading comments, following particular accounts, or spending time with certain people.
Ask yourself:
How do I feel after this?
Informed?
Inspired?
Connected?
Or angry, frightened and depleted?
Being spiritually aware doesn’t mean ignoring what’s happening in the world.
But there is a difference between being informed and repeatedly flooding ourselves with fear.
We can care deeply about the world without allowing its pain to consume every waking moment.
You Don’t Have to Be Perfect to Have Good Energy
I want to emphasize this because spiritual conversations about “good energy” can sometimes create another form of judgment.
None of us is energetically pure all the time.
We get angry.
We complain.
We become jealous.
We say something we wish we hadn’t.
We have bad days.
Being spiritually conscious doesn’t mean pretending those parts of ourselves don’t exist.
It means noticing them.
Taking responsibility.
Making amends when necessary.
And choosing again.
Purity isn’t perfection. It’s intention.
It’s the willingness to continually ask:
What am I contributing?
Imagine the Ripple Effect
Imagine if tomorrow millions of people consciously decided to contribute a little less anger to the world.
A little less judgment.
A little less cruelty.
And a little more patience.
More gratitude.
More generosity.
More forgiveness.
More compassion.
More love.
Would every problem disappear?
Of course not.
But something would change.
Families would change.
Relationships would change.
Workplaces would change.
Communities would change.
And those changes would ripple outward.
We often think healing the world requires some enormous action.
Sometimes it does.
But sometimes healing begins with one person becoming conscious of the energy they are bringing into the world.
And then another.
And another.
Healing Begins With You—but It Doesn’t End With You
Yesterday I wrote about opening the heart.
Today, I think the next question is:
What do we do with an open heart?
We use it.
We bring more love into our relationships.
We become more conscious of our thoughts.
We care for our own energy.
We help when we can.
We recognize our connection with other people, animals, nature and the planet itself.
We work on healing ourselves—not so that we can retreat from the world, but so that we can return to it carrying something better.
You may not be able to change everything happening on Earth today.
But you can change what you contribute to it.
And if enough of us do that, perhaps personal healing becomes something much larger.
Heal yourself. Share that healing. Let it ripple outward.
