Choosing a psychic medium can be an incredibly personal decision. Whether you’re hoping to connect with a loved one in Spirit, looking for guidance about something happening in your life, or simply curious about what a reading may offer, you’re putting a certain amount of trust in the person sitting across from you.
Unfortunately, as with almost every profession, not everyone offering psychic or mediumship readings operates with the same level of integrity.
I’ve had a couple of experiences myself that taught me just how important it is to do a little homework before choosing a psychic medium.
And more importantly, there are some very specific red flags consumers should know about.
A $900 “Spirit Attachment”
A couple of months ago, I accompanied a friend to a local downtown psychic for a reading.
During the session, the psychic told my friend that she had negative spirit attachments or entities around her. Naturally, hearing something like that can be frightening.
But then came the solution.
The psychic said she could remove these negative entities — for $900.
That’s where consumers need to be extremely careful.
One of the biggest red flags in the psychic industry is someone telling you that something terrible, dangerous, cursed, blocked, or spiritually harmful is attached to you — and then immediately offering to remove it for a substantial additional fee.
Think about the position this puts the client in.
The practitioner has created a problem that the client cannot independently verify and then positioned themselves as the person who can fix it.
Fear can be an incredibly powerful sales tool.
In my opinion, it has no place in an ethical psychic or mediumship reading.
Beware of Fear-Based Upselling
There are different spiritual beliefs about energy, attachments, curses, entities, karma, past lives, and many other things. People are entitled to their beliefs.
The issue isn’t necessarily the belief.
The red flag is using fear to pressure someone into spending more money.
Be cautious if a psychic tells you that:
- You have a curse that must be removed.
- A dark entity is attached to you.
- Someone has put negative energy around you.
- Your relationship will fail unless they perform spiritual work.
- Your money is spiritually blocked.
- Something bad will happen unless you purchase another service.
- You need an expensive cleansing, ritual, candle, crystal, or spiritual treatment immediately.
Particularly concerning is when the psychic is the only person who can supposedly identify the problem and the only person who can fix it — for an additional fee.
A reputable practitioner should never need to frighten you into becoming a repeat customer.
Another Reading Taught Me Something Different
I had another experience when I personally went to a psychic medium for a reading.
When the reading began, the practitioner picked up a tarot deck.
There was no shuffling.
There was no cutting of the cards.
There was no interaction with the deck.
They simply took approximately the first ten cards from the top of the deck, laid them out, and began giving me a reading.
None of it connected with my life.
Now, I want to make an important distinction here.
There are many talented and ethical tarot readers, and different readers have different techniques. Tarot itself wasn’t the problem.
What concerned me was the lack of any apparent process combined with a reading that had virtually no meaningful connection to me.
What Should Happen During a Card Reading?
Traditionally, tarot and other forms of card reading involve some method of randomizing or selecting the cards. The reader may shuffle, have the sitter shuffle, ask the sitter to cut the deck, fan the cards and have the sitter select them, or use another established method.
Different readers work differently.
I personally believe there can also be value in involving the sitter in the process. Their intention, questions, focus, and participation can become part of the experience.
But there’s an even bigger lesson here:
Don’t judge a psychic or medium solely by the tools they use. Judge the quality of the information you receive.
A beautiful tarot deck doesn’t make someone psychic.
Neither do crystals, candles, incense, spiritual clothing, or an impressive-looking reading room.
Ultimately, the information should matter.
Mediumship Should Contain Evidence
This is especially important when you’re looking specifically for a psychic medium rather than a general psychic or tarot reader.
Mediumship should involve more than vague statements.
In an evidential mediumship reading, I am looking for information that helps the sitter recognize the person in Spirit who appears to be communicating.
That may include personality traits, relationships, memories, circumstances, interests, physical characteristics, meaningful objects, or other specific details.
Not every piece of information will necessarily make sense immediately, and no ethical medium should promise that a particular person will communicate.
But there should be enough meaningful information for you to understand why the medium believes a connection is taking place.
Be Careful With Readers Who Ask Too Many Questions
There’s a difference between interacting with your medium and feeding them information.
A medium may ask you whether something makes sense. That’s normal.
But you shouldn’t have to tell the medium someone’s entire life story before receiving meaningful information.
For example, there’s a big difference between:
“Does that make sense to you?”
and:
“Who died? How old were they? How did they die? What did they do for work? Were you close?”
If you’re providing all the details, you have every right to wonder where the reading is coming from.
Look at the Psychic Medium’s Reputation
Before booking a reading, take a few minutes to research the person.
Look at their website. Read their reviews. Look at how they describe their services. See whether they clearly explain what you can and cannot expect from a reading.
You can also look for consistency.
Does this person appear to have an established practice? Are there reviews from actual clients? Do they clearly state their prices? Do they explain how sessions work?
Professionalism doesn’t guarantee psychic ability, of course.
But transparency matters.
No Ethical Medium Can Guarantee Who Will Come Through
This is another important red flag.
Be cautious of anyone who guarantees that they will connect with a specific deceased loved one.
Mediumship doesn’t work that way.
You can absolutely come into a reading hoping to connect with someone specific. In fact, I believe your desire and intention to make that connection can help create the energetic focus for the reading.
But I cannot force someone in Spirit to communicate.
No reputable medium should guarantee something they cannot control.
A Reading Should Empower You — Not Make You Dependent
This may be one of the most important things to remember.
A good psychic reading should provide insight, clarity, validation, or another perspective.
A mediumship reading may provide comfort, evidence, healing, or reassurance that our relationships with those we love don’t necessarily end with physical death.
But you should leave a reading feeling more empowered, not less.
You shouldn’t walk away believing that the psychic now controls your future.
You shouldn’t feel frightened that something terrible will happen unless you return.
And you shouldn’t feel that you suddenly need hundreds or thousands of dollars in additional spiritual services.
Your life still belongs to you.
Trust Your Own Intuition
Ironically, one of the best tools for choosing an intuitive practitioner is your own intuition.
Pay attention to how you feel when you’re researching someone.
Do they seem genuine?
Do they clearly explain their services and pricing?
Does their website make enormous promises?
Are they trying to scare you?
Are they promising guaranteed results?
Are they constantly trying to sell something more expensive?
There’s nothing wrong with deciding that someone simply isn’t the right psychic medium for you.
What I Believe a Psychic Medium Owes Their Clients
My own experiences as both a client and a professional psychic medium have helped shape how I approach my work today.
I believe clients deserve honesty.
They deserve compassion.
They deserve clear expectations.
They deserve to know what they’re paying before the reading begins.
And most importantly, they deserve a reading conducted without fear, manipulation, or pressure.
Mediumship deals with some of the most emotional parts of our lives — love, loss, grief, relationships, uncertainty, and our desire to know that the people we’ve loved are still connected to us.
That deserves to be treated with respect.
