Can You Get a Mediumship Reading Too Soon After Someone Dies?

Mediumship reading too soon after death – High Desert Medium in Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley

By High Desert Medium | Palm Springs Psychic Medium

One of the questions I’m sometimes asked is, “How long should I wait after someone dies before having a mediumship reading?”

Some people believe you should wait several weeks. Others have heard three months, six months, or even a year.

From my perspective as a psychic medium, there isn’t a set amount of time that applies to everyone. I brought through the spirit of a person who transitioned a day prior to a reading, and I’ve brought through a person who was deceased for more than 100 years (luckily, the sitter knew this great-grandparent in great detail and was able to validate the information I provided).

This has taught me that spirit doesn’t operate according to a calendar. In fact, the only hard rule is that rules don’t apply.

A loved one may be able to communicate relatively soon after passing. Another may not communicate for some time. And sometimes a person may not come through during a particular reading at all.

I believe much of this depends upon the spirit of the deceased and where they are in their own transition. If they wish to speak, or if they’re otherwise focused elsewhere.

Every Spirit’s Transition May Be Different

When someone dies, we naturally focus on the people left behind. We’re grieving, adjusting, remembering, and trying to understand what has happened.

But I also believe the person who has passed may be going through a transition of their own.

Exactly what happens after death is something none of us can prove with certainty. Even as a medium, I don’t claim to have all the answers about the afterlife.

What I can share is what I’ve experienced through mediumship.

Some spirits seem immediately capable of communicating. Their presence can feel clear, strong, and recognizable.

Others may not seem as readily available.

Why?

There could be many possibilities.

Perhaps they don’t yet have the energy necessary to communicate clearly.

Perhaps they’re still adjusting to being in Spirit.

Perhaps they’re experiencing what some spiritual traditions describe as a life review.

Perhaps they’re moving through another type of transition that we don’t completely understand from our perspective here.

Or perhaps they simply aren’t ready or able to communicate at that particular moment.

I don’t think we should assume that every person experiences death in exactly the same way.

Does a Spirit Need Energy to Communicate?

In my experience, mediumship requires a connection between the medium and Spirit.

Sometimes that connection feels incredibly strong.

Information comes quickly. I may receive names, memories, personality characteristics, relationships, images, physical sensations, or other details that help identify who’s communicating.

Other times, the connection can feel much more subtle.

I sometimes think of mediumship almost like trying to tune into a radio frequency. The station may be there, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the signal will be equally strong every time you turn on the radio.

If a spirit has recently crossed over, it’s possible that they simply don’t have the ability or energy to establish a strong connection yet.

That doesn’t mean anything is wrong.

And it certainly doesn’t mean they’ve disappeared.

It may simply mean not yet.

What About a Life Review?

You’ve probably heard people describe a life review after death—the idea that we somehow revisit or understand the experiences, relationships, choices, and consequences of the life we just lived.

I can’t tell you exactly what a life review looks like, how long it lasts, or whether every spirit experiences one in exactly the same way.

But I remain open to the possibility that some spirits may be occupied with their own process after passing.

If that’s true, there may be periods when communication with the living isn’t their primary focus.

And that’s okay.

One of the things I’ve learned through mediumship is that we shouldn’t try to impose our expectations of time onto Spirit.

So How Long Should You Wait?

I don’t believe there’s a universal answer.

You don’t necessarily have to wait three months.

You don’t necessarily have to wait six months.

And you certainly don’t have to wait exactly one year because somebody told you that’s the rule.

Instead, I think there are two different questions to consider.

The first is:

Is your loved one ready to communicate?

Unfortunately, that’s something we can’t know beforehand.

The second may be even more important:

Are you ready for the reading?

Your Readiness Matters Too

Grief can be overwhelming, particularly immediately after someone dies.

Sometimes a person wants a mediumship reading because they genuinely feel ready to connect.

Other times, they’re desperately searching for anything that will make the pain stop.

Mediumship can offer comfort, validation, and healing, but I don’t believe a reading should be viewed as a way to bypass grief.

You are still allowed to miss someone.

You’re still allowed to be angry.

You’re still allowed to cry.

You’re still allowed to have good days and terrible days.

A mediumship reading doesn’t erase the loss. Ideally, it helps us understand that the relationship may have changed, but love doesn’t simply disappear.

What If the Person I Want Doesn’t Come Through?

This is important.

No ethical psychic medium should guarantee that a specific deceased person will communicate during a reading.

You may desperately want to hear from your mother, father, spouse, child, sibling, friend, or another loved one.

Your desire for that connection can help create a strong intention for the reading.

But ultimately, I believe the decision and ability to communicate also belong to Spirit.

Your loved one may come through immediately.

Someone else may communicate first.

The connection may develop gradually during the reading.

Or the person you hoped to hear from may not communicate that day.

That doesn’t mean they don’t love you.

It doesn’t mean they’re angry with you.

And it doesn’t automatically mean something bad has happened to them.

There may simply be circumstances on the Spirit side that neither you nor I can see.

Be Careful of Anyone Who Uses Fear

This is also why I encourage people to be cautious when someone claims to know exactly what’s happening to a deceased loved one and then uses that information to frighten them.

Statements such as:

“Your loved one is trapped.”

“They can’t cross over.”

“There’s something attached to them.”

“You need to pay me to fix this.”

should immediately make you stop and think.

Mediumship should never be about frightening someone into purchasing additional services.

There are mysteries surrounding death and consciousness that none of us completely understand.

I think a responsible medium should be comfortable saying:

“I don’t know.”

Trust the Timing

If someone you love has recently died and you feel drawn toward having a mediumship reading, I don’t believe you need to watch the calendar waiting for an arbitrary date.

Instead, ask yourself whether you feel ready.

Then allow Spirit to handle the other half of the equation.

If your loved one is able and ready to communicate, perhaps that connection will happen.

If they’re not, perhaps the timing simply isn’t right yet.

Mediumship isn’t about forcing Spirit to perform on command.

It’s about creating an opportunity for communication and then remaining open to what comes through.

Sometimes the connection happens quickly.

Sometimes it takes time.

And sometimes, perhaps, Spirit has its own timetable.
