I have been thinking a lot lately about the state of our country.
And if I’m being truthful, it troubles me.
Everywhere I look, people seem more divided.
Republican against Democrat.
Conservative against liberal.
Urban against rural.
Religious against secular.
Rich against poor.
Neighbor against neighbor.
Family members who can no longer speak to one another.
Friends ending relationships because of politics.
People who once might have disagreed over an issue now looking at one another as though they are enemies.
And I keep coming back to one question:
What is happening to us?
Because beneath all of the political arguments, I think something much deeper is taking place.
We are becoming increasingly disconnected from one another.
And perhaps even more importantly, we are becoming disconnected from the understanding that we belong to one another.
What If the Real Divide Isn’t Left Versus Right?
Political disagreement is real.
People genuinely disagree about government, economics, immigration, religion, social policy, taxation, and what kind of country we should become.
Those disagreements matter.
But sometimes I wonder whether our constant focus on left versus right prevents us from seeing another divide that cuts across political affiliation entirely:
Those who feel secure and those who don’t.
People struggling to pay rent.
People worried about healthcare.
People working multiple jobs.
People wondering whether they’ll ever own a home.
People afraid their children will have fewer opportunities than they did.
And people who feel that despite working hard, the system increasingly doesn’t work for them.
Those anxieties don’t belong exclusively to one political party.
They exist across America.
Yet rather than recognizing how much fear and frustration we may share, we’re often encouraged to direct our anger horizontally—toward one another.
It can begin to feel like an economic and social struggle being expressed primarily as a political and cultural war.
And while we’re fighting with our neighbors, we may stop asking whether we have more in common with them than we’ve been led to believe.
Fear Makes Separation Easy
Fear is powerful.
When people are afraid, they naturally look for safety.
We begin separating the world into categories.
Us.
Them.
Good people.
Bad people.
People like me.
People responsible for my problems.
And fear has another unfortunate quality:
It makes complicated problems feel simple.
If only those people would change.
If only that political party disappeared.
If only those voters understood.
If only those people weren’t here.
But human beings aren’t that simple.
Neither are societies.
Most people want remarkably similar things.
Safety.
Love.
A home.
Meaningful work.
Enough money to live.
A future for their children.
To be respected.
To feel that their lives matter.
Perhaps we’ve forgotten that.
We Are More Than Our Political Identities
One of the dangers of modern political culture is that politics can become identity.
Instead of saying,
“I disagree with you,”
we begin saying,
“You are the problem.”
That difference matters.
Ideas can be debated.
Policies can be changed.
Governments come and go.
But when another human being becomes the enemy, something inside us begins to harden.
Compassion becomes weakness.
Curiosity becomes betrayal.
Listening becomes surrender.
And eventually, we stop seeing people.
We see labels.
That’s where I believe the spiritual danger begins.
The Spiritual Truth of Oneness
One of the deepest ideas found throughout mystical traditions is the concept of oneness.
That beneath the apparent separateness of individual lives, something connects us.
Call it Spirit.
Consciousness.
God.
Source.
Life.
Energy.
Love.
The language doesn’t matter nearly as much as the realization:
We are not as separate as we appear.
If we truly understood that, how differently would we treat one another?
What would happen if we looked at someone with completely different political beliefs and remembered:
That person has suffered.
That person has loved.
That person has lost someone.
That person has been afraid.
That person wants to matter.
That person is going to die someday, just as I will.
Suddenly the political label becomes much smaller.
The humanity becomes much larger.
Mediumship Has Changed the Way I See People
Working with Spirit has profoundly affected the way I understand human life.
In a mediumship reading, the political divisions that seem enormous here rarely seem important.
What comes through?
Love.
Family.
Regret.
Forgiveness.
Memories.
Apologies.
Humor.
Gratitude.
Relationships.
People don’t come through telling me which cable news channel they watched.
They talk about the people they loved.
They talk about the moments that mattered.
They talk about things left unsaid.
They remind us how quickly a human life passes.
And perhaps that’s one of the great lessons Spirit offers us:
Much of what divides us here is temporary.
Love is what remains.
What Are We Giving Our Attention To?
Human attention is powerful.
Whatever receives our attention grows larger in our experience.
And right now, enormous amounts of attention are being directed toward outrage.
Every day we’re shown something to fear.
Something to hate.
Someone to blame.
Something that should make us angry.
Outrage keeps us watching.
Fear keeps us clicking.
Division keeps us engaged.
But we still have a choice about what we feed.
We can stay informed without becoming consumed.
We can care about politics without hating our neighbors.
We can fight for what we believe is right without forgetting the humanity of people who disagree with us.
We can refuse to allow someone else’s anger to determine the state of our own consciousness.
Unity Does Not Mean Agreement
This is important.
Unity does not mean everyone must think alike.
Love does not mean passivity.
Compassion does not require abandoning your values.
There are times when injustice must be confronted.
There are policies worth opposing.
There are leaders who should be challenged.
There are beliefs that deserve criticism.
But there is a profound difference between confronting an idea and dehumanizing a person.
We can disagree fiercely and still remember:
You are human.
I am human.
We share this world.
That may sound simple.
Right now, I think it’s revolutionary.
Maybe the Work Begins With Us
It’s easy to look at the country and ask:
How do we fix this?
That’s an enormous question.
But perhaps spiritual change rarely begins with millions of people.
Perhaps it begins with one.
How do I speak about people I disagree with?
What am I feeding with my attention?
Am I adding fear to the world or reducing it?
Do I listen only to people who confirm what I already believe?
Have I allowed anger to become part of my identity?
Can I disagree without hatred?
Can I remain compassionate without becoming naive?
Can I recognize another human being before I recognize their politics?
Those questions are much harder than blaming the other side.
But they’re also much more powerful.
We Have Forgotten Who We Are
I come back again and again to something I’ve written about before:
We are Spirit having a human experience.
If that’s true, then we aren’t merely Americans, Republicans, Democrats, conservatives, liberals, Christians, atheists, workers, executives, wealthy people, poor people, or any of the other identities we temporarily wear.
Those identities matter within this life.
But they are not the totality of who we are.
At the deepest level, we are participants in the same life.
The same consciousness.
The same mystery.
The same human experience.
Maybe our greatest spiritual challenge isn’t learning how to communicate with Spirit.
Maybe it’s learning how to recognize Spirit in the person standing in front of us.
Especially when that person is different from us.
Fear Separates. Love Reconnects.
I don’t believe love means ignoring what’s happening in the world.
Quite the opposite.
Love asks us to care deeply.
But it also asks us not to become the very thing we oppose.
If we hate hatred, but become hateful, what have we accomplished?
If we fear division, but spend our days dividing people into categories of worthy and unworthy, what have we healed?
If we want peace while feeding ourselves anger every waking hour, where will peace come from?
Someone has to interrupt the cycle.
Why not us?
Perhaps This Is Part of Our Evolution
Maybe the evolution of human consciousness isn’t about acquiring supernatural abilities.
Maybe it’s about realizing that we cannot continue living from fear and separation without destroying something essential within ourselves.
Perhaps evolution means learning to hold complexity.
To disagree without hatred.
To recognize manipulation when fear is being used against us.
To question systems while maintaining compassion for individuals.
To recognize that another person’s suffering does not diminish our own.
And to remember that none of us becomes more whole by making someone else less human.
We Still Have a Choice
Despite everything happening around us, I remain hopeful.
Because consciousness can change.
People can change.
Societies can change.
And every one of us participates in that change through the way we think, speak, vote, listen, forgive, challenge, help, and love.
We may not be able to heal the entire country today.
But we can refuse to deepen its wounds.
We can choose curiosity over contempt.
Compassion over cruelty.
Connection over isolation.
Courage over fear.
And love over the endless invitation to hate one another.
Because ultimately, no political party owns this country.
No ideology owns humanity.
And no label changes the deepest truth:
We belong to one another.
Perhaps the moment we remember that is the moment real change begins.
