By High Desert Medium | Palm Springs Psychic Medium

If you’ve ever scheduled a psychic mediumship reading, you may have been surprised when the medium told you:
“Don’t tell me too much.”
That can seem strange.
After all, you’re coming to have a conversation. Shouldn’t the medium want to know who you’re hoping to connect with, how that person died, what your relationship was like, and what’s been happening in your life?
Actually, no.
At least not at first.
When I conduct an evidential mediumship reading, I prefer that you give me as little information as possible before we begin.
There’s a very simple reason for this:
I want the information to come from Spirit—not from you.
What Is Evidential Mediumship?
Evidential mediumship is exactly what the name suggests.
The medium attempts to receive information associated with a person in Spirit that can be recognized and validated by the person receiving the reading.
That information can take many forms.
I may receive impressions about someone’s:
- Personality
- Appearance
- Relationship to you
- Memories
- Interests or hobbies
- Occupation
- Important places
- Family relationships
- Mannerisms
- Circumstances surrounding their passing
Sometimes the evidence is something significant.
Other times, it’s incredibly ordinary.
And strangely enough, those ordinary details can sometimes provide the strongest validation.
A particular flower.
An old red bicycle.
A nickname.
A favorite meal.
A dog.
A piece of jewelry.
A song.
Something that happened in the family after the person passed.
The detail may mean absolutely nothing to me.
But it may mean everything to you.
That’s part of what makes evidential mediumship so fascinating.
If You Tell Me the Answer, It Isn’t Evidence
Suppose you begin your reading by saying:
“I’m hoping to connect with my father. His name was Robert. He died from a heart attack two years ago. He was a mechanic, loved motorcycles, and we used to go fishing together.”
You’ve just given me an enormous amount of information.
Now imagine that during the reading I tell you I’m aware of a father figure, heart problems, mechanical work, motorcycles, and fishing.
Would that feel particularly validating?
Probably not.
You already told me all of it.
Now imagine instead that you simply sit down for the reading and allow me to work.
I become aware of a father figure.
I feel something involving the chest.
I’m shown tools and mechanical work.
Then I see a motorcycle.
A little later, I’m shown the two of you near water with fishing equipment.
Now we have something very different.
You didn’t give me those details.
That’s why I prefer not to know too much.
Let the Medium Do the Work
Sometimes clients understandably want to help.
They want the reading to go well.
They want their loved one to come through.
So when the medium begins receiving something, the client starts filling in the blanks.
For example, I might say:
“I’m being shown a woman who feels maternal…”
And the client immediately responds:
“That’s my mother! Her name was Susan. She died of cancer, and we were incredibly close.”
I understand the excitement.
But now I know much more than I needed to know.
A better response might simply be:
“Yes, I understand that.”
Then let me continue.
Maybe I receive the name Susan.
Maybe I become aware of the illness.
Maybe I receive something about your relationship.
Maybe Spirit takes the communication somewhere completely unexpected.
Give the information room to develop.
Don’t Feed the Medium—But Don’t Be Difficult Either
There’s an important balance here.
Giving too much information isn’t helpful.
But intentionally withholding validation isn’t helpful either.
You don’t need to sit completely expressionless and refuse to answer anything because you’re trying to “test” the medium.
A mediumship reading is a cooperative process.
If I say:
“I’m being shown a man who feels like a grandfather figure. He had something going on with his legs. Does that make sense to you?”
If it makes sense, say yes.
If it doesn’t, say no.
If you’re unsure, say:
“I’m not sure yet.”
That’s enough.
You don’t have to explain the entire family history.
Let me keep working.
You Are Absolutely Allowed to Ask Questions
I also want to make something very clear:
Not giving the medium too much information does NOT mean you shouldn’t ask questions during your reading.
I encourage questions.
If there’s something you want clarity about, ask.
If you want to know whether a particular subject can be addressed, ask.
If something I’ve said is confusing, tell me.
If you want me to explain something differently, say so.
Your reading is for you.
The distinction is between participating in your reading and supplying the evidence that the medium is supposed to be receiving.
Those aren’t the same thing.
Why Specific Details Matter
Imagine you’re hoping to hear from your grandmother.
A medium could say:
“Your grandmother loved you very much.”
That’s comforting.
But most grandmothers love their grandchildren.
Now imagine the medium says:
“I’m being shown a little ceramic bird. It feels like something that sat near her kitchen window, and I keep getting blue around it.”
And your grandmother had a small blue ceramic bird sitting on the windowsill above her kitchen sink for 30 years.
That’s different.
The specificity is what makes the information meaningful.
The medium didn’t need to know about the bird.
You didn’t need to tell them.
The information stands on its own.
That’s what we’re looking for.
Sometimes Evidence Doesn’t Make Sense Immediately
Another reason not to give too much information is that mediumship isn’t always immediately understandable.
Sometimes I’ll receive something and the person I’m reading says:
“No, that doesn’t make sense.”
That’s okay.
I may ask them to remember it.
Sometimes five minutes later another piece of information arrives and suddenly the first piece makes perfect sense.
Other times the client verifies it after the reading.
They call a family member and discover that the detail was correct.
This happens because the sitter doesn’t necessarily know everything about the person in Spirit.
Your mother had a life before you were born.
Your grandfather had experiences you may never have heard about.
Your spouse had conversations when you weren’t present.
Not recognizing something immediately doesn’t automatically mean it’s wrong.
Sometimes it simply means:
You don’t recognize it yet.
Mediumship Isn’t About Getting 100% of Everything Right
It’s also important to have realistic expectations.
Mediums are human.
We receive impressions and then have to interpret them.
An image, feeling, word, sensation, or thought has to pass through the medium’s own mind before it can be communicated.
Sometimes interpretation can be imperfect.
For example, a medium might be shown something that looks like a lake.
The sitter says no.
Later it turns out the person lived near a large reservoir.
The information was there, but the interpretation wasn’t exact.
That’s why I try to describe what I’m receiving rather than forcing it to fit a story.
The less information you give me, the easier it is for me to stay with what I’m actually receiving.
What Should You Tell Your Psychic Medium?
Very little is required.
You don’t need to provide an obituary.
You don’t need to explain everyone’s relationships.
You don’t need to tell me how someone passed.
You don’t need to give me a list of names.
And you don’t need to tell me everything that’s happening in your life before a psychic reading either.
Let the reading unfold.
If information becomes necessary, I can ask.
What If You Want to Connect With One Specific Person?
It’s perfectly okay to come into a mediumship reading hoping to hear from someone specific.
Most people do.
Your intention matters.
If you’ve lost your spouse, mother, father, child, sibling, friend, or another important person, naturally you may want to hear from them.
You don’t need to pretend otherwise.
But there is a difference between holding the intention of connecting with someone and telling the medium everything about that person before the reading begins.
You can quietly hold that person in your heart.
Be open.
Be receptive.
And allow the communication to unfold.
No ethical medium should guarantee that one particular person will communicate. Spirit communication isn’t something a medium can command.
But your desire for that connection can be part of the energy and intention you bring into the reading.
Openness Helps the Reading Flow
One of the best things you can bring to a mediumship reading isn’t information.
It’s openness.
You don’t have to believe everything you’re told.
You don’t have to force anything to fit.
And you shouldn’t validate something that genuinely doesn’t make sense.
But you can remain receptive.
Listen.
Allow the medium to work.
Validate what you recognize without providing unnecessary details.
Ask questions when you have them.
And don’t become so focused on hearing one particular piece of information that you miss something meaningful that’s already coming through.
Sometimes Spirit communicates in ways we aren’t expecting.
The Medium Should Be Giving You Information
Ultimately, this is the simplest way I can explain it:
You’re not coming to a psychic mediumship reading to tell me about your loved ones.
You’re coming to see what I can tell you.
The information should come toward you—not the other way around.
And when a medium gives you a specific detail they had no reasonable way of knowing, that can create a very different experience from simply hearing information you’ve already supplied.
That’s where evidential mediumship becomes meaningful.
It isn’t about proving anything to anyone else.
It’s about what the evidence means to you.
