One of the questions I’m asked from time to time is:
“If Spirit can communicate, why don’t they just tell you exactly what they want to say?”
It’s a fair question.
Many people imagine mediumship as though a loved one in Spirit simply walks up and begins speaking in complete sentences. While there are moments when words come through clearly, that’s often not how communication works.
More often than not, Spirit communicates through symbols, images, emotions, memories, and impressions that carry meaning far beyond a single word.
Understanding why can help you appreciate the beauty—and the intelligence—behind evidential mediumship.
A Picture Can Say More Than a Paragraph
Think about how your own mind works.
If I say the word “beach,” you probably don’t just see the letters B-E-A-C-H.
You might picture the ocean, smell salt in the air, hear waves crashing, or remember a favorite vacation.
Our minds naturally think in pictures and associations.
Spirit appears to communicate in much the same way.
Instead of handing me a sentence, they may show me a baseball glove, a wedding ring, a yellow rose, or an old pickup truck.
Each image opens the door to a larger story.
Symbols Are Personal
This is one of my favorite parts of mediumship.
The same symbol can mean completely different things to different people.
A butterfly might represent transformation to one person.
To another, it may remind them of a grandmother who collected butterflies.
A coffee mug may seem ordinary—until a client tells me it belonged to the person they’re hoping to hear from and that no one else would know its significance.
Spirit often chooses symbols because they’re deeply personal.
They’re not trying to impress us with something dramatic.
They’re trying to remind us of shared experiences that only the two of you would understand.
Spirit Communicates Beyond Language
One of the fascinating things about Spirit communication is that it doesn’t seem limited by spoken language.
I’ve had impressions arrive as emotions, images, or a simple knowing long before words formed in my mind.
It’s almost as though Spirit communicates the idea first, and my mind translates that idea into language.
That’s one reason two mediums may describe the same message using different words while still conveying the same meaning.
The heart of the message remains the same.
Why Mediums Sometimes Ask Questions
People occasionally wonder why a medium asks,
“Does this mean anything to you?”
The answer is simple.
Symbols often require confirmation.
If Spirit shows me a sailboat, I don’t immediately assume your loved one owned one.
It might represent:
- A family vacation.
- A lifelong dream.
- A nickname.
- A career.
- A favorite hobby.
- A place where important memories were made.
By working together, the symbol often unfolds into something beautifully meaningful.
Sometimes the Smallest Details Mean the Most
One of the greatest misconceptions about mediumship is that big messages are always the most powerful.
In reality, it’s often the tiny details that bring tears.
A favorite candy.
A worn baseball cap.
The smell of cinnamon.
A blue rocking chair.
An old joke shared between father and daughter.
These simple symbols often become the strongest evidence because they’re so personal.
They remind us that our loved ones remember the little moments that made life meaningful.
Trust the Process
When clients first hear an unusual symbol during a reading, they sometimes think,
“That doesn’t make any sense.”
Then a few moments later, the memory surfaces.
Suddenly everything fits.
That’s why I encourage people to stay open throughout a reading.
Not every symbol reveals its meaning immediately.
Sometimes it unfolds naturally as the conversation continues.
Spirit Chooses What Matters Most
I’ve come to believe that Spirit doesn’t communicate randomly.
Every image, memory, feeling, or symbol has a purpose.
Sometimes it’s meant to provide evidence that your loved one is truly present.
Sometimes it’s meant to bring comfort.
Sometimes it’s simply their way of saying,
“I remember.”
And perhaps that’s one of the greatest gifts mediumship can offer.
The reassurance that love—and the memories built through that love—continue beyond physical life.
